Can You Recommend a Good Book?

Today is my birthday, and I actually have a free day. It's beautiful weather to sit outside and read, but I'm at a loss for a good book. Would love to download one to my Kindle and sit on the deck with my dogs and a pitcher of iced tea beside me.

I've been going through a stressful patch caring for sick family members, and given the recent TV news I don't want to read about murders, incest, rapes, etc.

I'm not into chick-lit - not looking for something that light and predictable. Anyone read any good books lately that they could recommend? Doesn't have to be a new release. I'm sure I've missed some good ones from the past.

Laurie, I think a good introduction to annuals would be to pick up a few good seed catalogs or go to a few good seed company sites - Johnny's, Thompson& Morgan, Park Seed, Swallowtail, etc. - and thumb through/look through them. I used to be primarily a perennial gardener also, and when I started growing annuals from seed, I was amazed at all the different plants that were out there! So much more than what the average garden center sells. One thing to be aware of - not all annuals bloom all summer. I was rudely awakened to this fact, again when I started growing a lot of annuals from seed. I was used to the usual suspects in garden centers, which, for the most part, do bloom all summer. So I was surprised when, for instance, my poppies did not stick around all summer. But that's not necessarily a bad thing; it's just something you have to plan for. So check bloom times. Sounds like sundews would be a good 'companion plant' and they should do fairly well with those violets. You can't grow them in the same pots- carnivores need a 'special' mix of peat moss & pearlite / sand. Ratios vary between growers- I use about 50 / 50 peat / pearlite for all of mine. Also if you put fertilizer in the water the carnivores will die as they cannot deal with it. They need relatively pure water- I was using well water for mine for a while... But they started dying so I built a rain catcher (effectively a barrel & a funnel- It rains enough here the big joke being the state flower is mold...) thus expect to water them with rain or bought special distilled (Not bottled drinking, it often contains salts) water. Some folks even go as far as installing a reverse osmosis watering filter- But for a few plants that's surely overkill. I would go with a few cheap "rosette" sundews at first- spatulata and / or aliciae, simply because I like them & I've found they are rather prolific. Once they flower & the seeds fall you'll find them popping up *Everywhere*. Adelae & capensis may also be good choices- With their longish leaves they catch *Lots* of gnats & fruit flies. In the summer I sometimes take mine outside on a field trip to the compost pile- By the end of the day they're black with fruit flies. Start small- learn from experience & soon you may be trolling ebay in the winter for pygmy drosera gemmae.. Perhaps you'll have a Cephalotus or two.. Maybe even a few Heliamphora. Carnivores are one of those "once you start... You can't stop" things.

You live in New Hampshire you say? What Agway is this? You are lucky since I have never seen citrus sold anywhere near us except for at Nurseries and they are still going for 34.99 a pop and ever more! I think the cheapest ones I saw were at the local nursery yesterday and they were 1/2 off. Lots of Meyers, Kumquats, Calamondin and so on they are just going to leave outside for death, probably tonight:-( Mike gave you some very good basics! How far do you live from Worcester Ma? Fertilizer: Can you get a bottle of fertilizer locally with the numbers Mike speaks of? If you can not get one with those numbers such as Foliage Pro, then at least use one with a higher nitrogen content. Citrus trees feed heavily on nitrogen. Your fertilizer should have more nitrogen (N) than phosphorous (P) or potassium (K). Use at least a 2-1-1 ratio. Miracid Soil Acidifier is a water-soluble product that works well and is a 3-1-1 ratio Mix: If your citrus are growing in a mix that drains very well and is porous, then you could feed at every watering 1/4 strength. If not, then I would fertilizer as the directions say and make sure to flush out your soil mix once a month with fresh water. DO NOT WATER IF THE TOP OF THE SOIL IS DRY WITHOUT CHECKING THE SOIL AT ROOT LEVEL Humidity: Your trees will do fine without, but better with it. Those grown in humid environments have better flowers that last longer although the foliage stays fine. Mix choice would be my main concern over humidity for sure. Watch for pests of any sort, frequently. Make sure to never let these buggers slip by you and gain the upper hand. Fruit: How long the fruit takes to develop depends on your growing conditions. The happier your plant is the better the fruit development. The more sun, fertilizer, warmth the faster the fruit grow. Your choice of mix will determine it's vigor for sure along with these other factors. They self pollinate. The Meyer lemon tree is self fruitful, which is the horticulturists' way of saying "self pollinator." Where can you go for a good read on citrus? Right here. Glad to see Daisy joined this thread! I need to make my way over to the herb forum myself, I am under-utilizing my herbs. I find herbal information in books hard to interpret, sometimes because the books are really old. So I question goggle and out pops the great responses from Daisy and/or Fatamorgana! See? you two are better than books! Luke_oh I see that Dave answered the question for you. I would only add that I use the peels because I know that nothing has been sprayed on my fruit. Hey I do wash them very well (bird poop on organic fruit is still bird poop....LOL). A couple of other ways to preserve the rind is to use them to make a syrup and filter the rinds away from the liquid, you get candied rinds that way. Just like what you use in marmalade minus the marmalade. I use those in baked products. To use in tea, I just let them sit, cut into convenient size pieces. If your climate is humid maybe a dehydrator would be better, try without and see what you get. I got the idea from the orange flavor in one of my favorite commercial tea blends, all they did was add orange peels! Timing for dill/cucumbers and tomatoes&peppers/cilantro is a real bummer indeed. I freeze a lot of my winter cilantro since I do not want to go to the store just for cilantro when I have everything else for salsa. This works, but as you folks already know, there is no substitute for fresh cilantro. Frozen works pretty well, it looses some flavor, so I just add a little more....;-) I know of another herb named CULANTRO. It is tropical, so it should not require cold weather at all. If you come across it just remember that a little bit goes a long way, it is VERY strong, but has the cilantro taste. I will plant some when i find seed for it. As far as dill goes, well it is my one problematic herb. The rolly pollys (or slugs?) do a number on it usually at night. So I do go to the store for dill when I make dilly bean pickles or some cucumber pickles. This year I am trying another dill variety and so far it seems to be doing better, but still too early to tell. I make pesto (minus the parmesan) and freeze flat in ziplock bags. When I need some I can easily brake a chunk of it. Basil does dry reasonably well too. zabby, the citrus is a mixed blessing. I walk to work, and have been carrying a day pack full of citrus a couple of times a week. I could probably get rid of more, I work in two separate buildings...my coworkers are appreciative of it, so why not? I have also considered calling a food pantry, I might do that if the giant minneola is still loaded by April. Don't get me wrong, I love citrus! I have also been eating citrus fruit every day. Tsatsuma tangerines, navel oranges, and the grapefruits are tasting a lot better this year.

I especially love anything by Adriana Trigiani. Just finished her newest book The Shoemakers Daughter. Others by her That I have enjoyed Queen of the Big Time, Lucia, Lucia, Bravo Valentine and Merry Valentine. They are about turn of the century women who make a business for themselves. She also has a series of 4 books which I haven't read yet.

Ann Tyler older books. I am a bit disappointed in her recent ones.
The accidental Toursit is my favorite.
Same thing woth John Irving. I like his older bookds as well. Cider House Rules is one of my favorites.

One of my favorite books of all time is The Grand Sophy. It is witty, funny, surprising and well written but it is a quasi romance, sort of anyway. More of a penned Downton Abbey type of drama.

I'm currently reading a book called Wish You Well by David Baldacci. He usually writes legal thrillers though I've never read any of them. This book is more of a coming of age tale that takes place in the rural mountains of Virginia's coal country during the 1940s. So far, it's good!

Oh, one other that I've seen recommended quite a bit lately and seems to be on all of my friends reading lists is Gone Girl by Gillian Flynn. It must be popular (perhaps indicative that it's good?) b/c I'm #346 on the waiting list at the library! I might just have to break down and buy that one. Anyone here read it?

My book club just finished Unbroken and our next book is Doc, a novel about Doc Holliday. It is historical fiction.

Javachik, the name of Walls other book was The Glass Castle. I just loved that book. I forgot about Half Broke Horses and will have to read that now. What a writer.

I highly recommend any book by Jhumpa Lahiri, especially Interpreter of Maladies.

I just read Gone Girl, I think I picked it up from a recommendation here. It was good, I really liked it. Lots of twists and unexpected turns.

I even paid the rental book fee instead of waiting on the list. It's $3 for a 21 day rental. I figure the library needs the money so I splurged. I usually just wait on the list but I couldn't find anything else I wanted and the title jumped out at me. It was definitely worth $3 to read it.

My library just put a kiosk, like a vending machine, in at my community center. It has movies, kids book, and adult books. I can take out a book, from the vending machine, while I'm at the gym. How cool is that?

The kiosk books are free, the rentals are extra copies of the extremely popular titles and are kept in the main branch. I imagine it's a nice little money maker for them.

I just finished "Shipping News" by E. Annie Prouix. She has a very interesting, rich writing style and obviously did her homework w/this one. My daughter loaned it to me, then my husband (who typically doesn't read fiction) read it, and it is now loaned out to a friend of his.

"The Lace Reader" by B. Barry.

I'm half way thru and am loving it. It is a New York Times bestseller and I haven't always had good luck with the bestsellers. but I'm really enjoying this one.
