use of Fosomax for osteoporosis

I am 51 years young and went for my first bone scan. My doctor wants me to take Fosomax 70 mg one time a week for prevention of osteoporosis. I have a family history of this disease and arthritis. After viewing the intrenet I have concerns about taking Fosomax. Because I am relativley young I do not want to be taking a drug for the next thirty years. Any suggestions, comments....

I've been taking Fosamax 70 MG for the past two years. I haven't noticed any side effects from taking this drug, and next year I'll have another bone density test to see if there is any improvement in my bone health. I'm 5 years older than you, and I also have a family history with Osteoporosis. My mother suffered from this disease, and both of my younger sisters also have it. Tuffs University has done a lot of research on Osteoporosis and Dr. Miriam Nelson has a website www.Strongwomen.com that I would recommend you visit. Strength training and weight bearing exercises have been proven to also contribute to bone density. You can also sign up for Dr. Nelson's monthly newsletter - free of cost.

I have been diagnosised with osteo pina and I really really hope to make a difference with strength training and weight bearing exercises as the previous poster mentioned. my consult with the doctor isn't until next week but since I know that bone will repair I hope to avoid the fosamax ...it is some really nasty stuff and I would like to avoid it if I can...It will really depend on the results of my bone scans..

Mom had problems with Fosomax & quit, she talked to her 7th day Advent sister 1st. Sis says Fosomax turns your bone hard & useless. ACtonal has 6 pages in Physicians' Desk Reference book(1 dr. uses in his office) I got 1 since my mom had so many bad reactions. Now I check the drugs out 1st before she takes them. Detrol LA nearly killed my mom 2 yrs ago she took it for 2 weeks got unbelieveable muscle pain, hospital didn't have a clue, did MRI's after 10 days in hospital they put her in nursing home for month. I asked them for list of what she was taking- they were giving her Detrol LA -she was so dried up I was rubbing her feet with lotion, chapstick for her lips.I told them to get her off it & Bingo- I checked her out & she started getting well. It works well on some but on others it takes water out of cells of body, without it nothing works right!! DIL took Zocor-statin to lower cholestrol- got thyroid tumors- needed surgery- I told her to get off it before she went to appt in 2 weeks- by then dr. said he couldn't understand why they shrunk- no more zocor-so moral of this is check out what they are giving you & if you feel lot worse, wise to stop taking it. Oh MOst osteoporosis drugs are estrogen based. Actonal isn't. Safer is take calcium & be sure you take Vit.D some magnesium & zinc.Jan

I've seen both good and bad reports on drinking coffee. After my kidney transplant, my doctors put me on a "regular" diet. That is, eat what I want, whatever appeals to me. I was told not to go overbord on calories and fat, and drink between 2 to 3 quarts a day of liquid. I keep a pitcher of filtered water spiked with lemon juice in my fridge. Docs told me water, diet soda and coffee are good for me. I do have osteopenia (low bone density) and also have some arthritis in my knees and heelspurs (the foot pain comes and goes). The chemicals (elements) your bones and body require are phosphorous, calcium and magnesium. An occasional physical check up is needed to make sure everything's in balance. As a kidney patient, I get my blood tested every 2 weeks.

I took Fosamax for years, then a 2-year stint on injectable Forteo, now I'm on Boniva. The doctor suggested that I switch to Evista (which as Tally says helps protect against breast cancers), but I said "no" because side effects include blood clots in legs and lungs, and stroke. These are not common side effects. The cardiologist told me if I switch to Evista, then I would need to be sure to take baby aspirin. Maybe I'll switch to Evista later. All these bone drugs are fairly new, and I feel like a real guinea pig (squeek squeek!), but I am afraid to take nothing. Kat, you have to talk with your doctors to figure out which one is best for you. If you want to see a specialist, that would be an endocrinologist. Good luck with all this. You'll want to be tested for vitamin D and calcium and take supplements for that as well if needed. I send you a big hug for working so hard to take care of yourself. Good thing you are near to world class medical care.

As of yet I have no signs of bone density loss. I am 60. I have never ever been a milk drinker since I was into my 3rd year. I am a not a great dairy eater except for cheese and cream which I eat in moderation. I do not take any vitamins or supplements. I did take natal and prenatal vitamins as prescribed by my doctor during my childbearing years. I think simple genetics plays a role. I also believe that women who over diet into staying thin can add to the later thinning of their bones. I credit my healthy (thus far) bones to genetics,exercise and a bit of extra padding in my middle years and presently. With all the controversy over supplements and medications I choose to take nothing unless it is something that would actually be life-saving 0r proven to treat a certain condition. I take my thyroid meds religiously for example. if I had high blood pressure I would take my meds for that. High cholesterol? I o would really have to think about it. Too many pros and cons so that would have to be a carefully informed decision. I think we need to concentrate on healthy balanced diets, a weight based on health and not vanity, and exercise and balance throughout out lives. I lost balance due to hearing loss so I concentrate on that area. It's not as good as it was but I must say it is much better than a lot of my younger friends. Except in extreme cases most breaks in elderly are due to falls. Working on balance can prevent those falls or at least lessen the chance of them. I am sure that in some people there is drug therapy to delay the advancement of Osteo. But like Glenda said exercise,weight training etc. play a role too. I believe a greater one. And for every prescribed drug that has controversial side effects or no effects there are so called perfectly "natural" OTC supplements that have the same downsides and can even be more harmful. So if one is taking advice of thier local "nutritionist" at the health food store or Vitamin Store they should do some heavy research on the real science behind these drugs.

I have osteoporosis too, and have taken Fosamax. I became concerned about the long term effects and decided to look for an alternative. There is one! I found a Chinese Herbal Medicine called Xianling Gubao. It is hard to find here in the states, as it is under approval by our FDA at this time. It is offered in OTC form in China, however, and I have a supplier there.
Unlike many Chinese Traditional Medicines, this one is manufactured by a highly respected firm who does clinical trials to verify the efficacy of their medicines. Xianling Gubao in its trials shows efficacy equal to the biophosphonates! It has no side effects, either!
I have decided to try and market it, and have a website. If you are interested, I have links to the clinical trial information. The price is reasonable, considering shipping from China.
