Moving

Hi, don't know if this is the fourm to talk about this but here goes.

My husband and I have sold our home in which we have lived for 28 years. Our 2 daughters were born here and went to school in the neighbourhood.

I know it is time to move on since the property is getting too much for my husband to look after and the house needs a lot of repairs. BUT, I just feel terrible about leave the home and neighbourhood. So many memories, good memories, just feel awful. We are moving into a nice condomimium townhouse but I am sure it will never be home again.

Has anyone else every felt this way??

I've not had this experience, but I'm sure your feelings are entirely natural. You have years and years of powerful memories of your girls growing up, and it just must make your heart ache to leave. But things change, don't they?

Try thinking of your home as just a building. What gives it life is the people in it, you and your husband and your daughters. And your family is what will give your condo the life you have had in your home, because you are not leaving your family behind.

As for neighbors and leaving those realtionships, that's terribly difficult too, isn't it? Do your best to stay in touch, meet them for lunch and a movie. Call often. Plan a housewarming party and invite the old neighbors--make it a BBQ, sandwiches or something easy to do. Start building some memories in the condo.

Thanks Susan for you kind thoughts, yes I think I will post my message on the Kitchen Table Forum, never thought of that.

People in the neighbourhood keep coming around and saying good bye, makes me even feel worse.

I know I will eventually get over it, but I truly don't think I will ever think of my new house as my home.

Thank you for the advice! The leaves are not wilting, its the blooms that are turning brown. I keep running into big healthy hydrangea plants all over town that are out in the middle of sun, no chance of shade and they are fabulous! I don't know why mine are having such a hard time. I wonder if it is the Endless Summer variety? My Annabelle is HUGE full of blooms with no sensitivity to sun. All planted on the same day. Is it because it is their first year and they will be more established next year?

I might be wrong about this, but I think the goal with overwintering potted hostas is to keep them out of the sun. So I would put the pots in a shaded location. Colder and darker is better I think. Plastic pots that won't break. I had several on the screened porch last year (NNE facing). That kept them dry, and they were shaded. And I've overwintered in the unheated garage. I'll have pots in both locations this year because I just didn't get around to planting them in the summer. C'est la vie - I'm only human. But wet newspaper and plastic bags would be great if you're indeed going to have them out of the ground short-term - like if you can dig them up, transport them to the new home, and stick 'em in the ground fairly quickly. (Or - if you want to throw them on the driveway for a while!)

Help! To move or not move the fireplace?

Thank you all! Your feedback has been helpful. I can't move the front door or the bedroom door, so I'm left with moving the fireplace either to the left or into the corner. If it goes to the left it is actually more centered in the room even though it's not centered on the wall. chispaThe TV is going above the FP sheadsheadThe FP is a non-negotiable so trying to figure out the best way to make it work. Moving new island by 3", it moved during countertop installation

My 2 cents... If I am understanding correctly, when the countertop people came the island was in one place, when they left it was in another place. They need to come and pull the tops on their dime and then you or the cabinet company can move the island back into place and they can reinstall the tops. Alternatively they can accept responsibility if the top is damaged while you move the island, or they can come move the island. I completely agree that the cabinets should have been mounted to the floor but so far as I know that is not required. However, the island was in one place when they got there and another place when they left and since you didn't hire them to move the island... That is really the more minor issue though. I would argue that they are at fault for any expense you incur to remove and reinstall the top. There is no way that the countertop people didn't realize that the island moved 3" and at that point they had a duty to pause the installation until the situation was addressed. Once a defect is discovered you are not allowed to make the defect more costly to address just because you believe it is someone else's fault. Moving the island back into place before the tops were installed would be a fairly minor job without any real risk, moving the island back into place once the tops are installed increases the risk. So be willing to pay the trip charge, as you might have had to pay that even if they properly stopped work, but resist paying anything more.

I think everyone would feel regret and sorrow for leaving a home where there was happiness and memories. We have only been in this house for about 15 years, but it is more like "home" than any place I have ever lived. It would be a big burden to leave.

Take care of yourself. It will never be the same, but the change can have a lot of good things for you too. Don't ignore the new opportunities.
