Removing section of carpet to put down vinyl

I would like to remove two different sections in my living room to replace it with vinyl sheet flooring. The areas I'm talking about are right inside my front door ( front door opens right into my living room) and the area just before the dining room. Both of these sections are so soiled that the shampooer doesn't do a good enough job anymore. These are the only two sections I hate looking at. I've seen a few houses where they have had this done. The sections wouldn't be that large and would look way better than the soiled carpet and would save me a headache everytime people come in from outside when it's wet outside. Even if I only do the one section in front of my front door, I'd be happy. Any ideas on how to do this? Thank you.

For small sections with high wear, vinyl won't be very cost effective or durable. Porcelain tile would be a better material. Either way, the floor needs to be flat and smooth.

For your application, the LVT type of tile, like the Allure would be the easiest to DIY as it sticks to itself as a loose lay. However, it will need some type of anchoring at the edges to stay stable since it's such a small amount. Transition strips screwed into the subfloor over the vinyl would be your best bet for that.

If you decide to do tile, then what needs to happen depends on your subfloor type and how stiff it is.

Since most sheet vinyl flooring is sold in a 12 foot width, there would be a cost issue. However, sheet vinyl of a high quality can be a very durable and attractive flooring option that has the clear advantage of being seamless.

In the 60's vinyl floors and many other products used asbestos in the backing of the products. It inert unless you sand or disturb it in some ways. My own installers ripped up my floor and hauled it away. Don't panic as installers do this every day. It generally takes years of exposure to working with asbestos for it to have an affect. One isolated incident shouldn't send you into a panic.

VInyl sheet flooring would be a much better product for this application. Since it's only for a limited time, you could purchase the cheapest thing going and still have it be a continuous sheet over the plywood. However, the issue is going to be the wall/floor joint. Male dogs mark on vertical surfaces, i.e. the wall. This runs down the wall onto the flooring and in between the wall/floor gap. The best solution would be applying preprimed and painted quarter round after the sheet floor installation and then a good caulking job for the joints between the wall/quarter and floor/quarter. Getting your dog neutered will just about eliminate any marking issues. The testosterone present in an intact dog is usually the culprit for a lot of aggression and possessivenes behaviors. Not to mention it also greatly increases the chance of cancer in your dog to have him remain intact. Crate training and leash/tethering him to you while he is in the home so that he is always under your direct supervision will work to elminate any habit that may remain after the jewels are gone. Treat him like a baby that needs potty training all over again and you'll have a success. Belly bands also help a LOT.

HandyMac, I probably have that wrong in regards to the subfloor, it is with a reputable dealer so I am sure the subfloor and the installation would be done correctly. I like to think ahead and don't like the idea of major demo to remove so am thinking the floating would be best. Another question for you on pricing, this is a small room 10.5 x 11.5 which has carpet on it presently which would need removal. I received a quote on some Armstrong luxury plank vinyl in the best range of quality(floating floor). To remove carpet, put down any subfloor necessary (160.00 deduct if subfloor is not needed) and replace quarter-round or toeboard is $1,549.00. I am in Michigan so labor may be fairly high priced. Does this sound reasonable?

Level isn't all that important for the flooring - level is important for everything but the flooring - installing doors, cabinets, appliances etc. Flat is the major issue with flooring and that means really flat, not just kinda-sorta-mostly flat. We recently glued down rubber floor tiles in my basement remodel which had a typical 80 year old "flat" concrete floor. We started by filling the obvious small holes and found that helped but was not nearly sufficient. In the end, my partner used a feather finish compound and skimmed the entire floor surface. After that, we knocked down any trowel marks and laid out tiles over the surface. Anything we could feel through the tiles received another round of either knock down or build up. We walked all over the floor in every direction trying to find all the places with a notable dip. It is surprising how the body can find even very shallow depressions in the floor, a couple of mm thick. Another reason to be very picky at this stage is that the tile corners won't line up if the surface isn't flat and there aren't grout lines to hide any issues

Big box stores often sell smaller remnants of sheet vinyl that are cheaper and easier to work with.

Katie: the basic process is:
1. Remove carpet: Cut out the carpet with a utility knife. It will have padding underneath it, which needs to be removed as well. There will be tack strips along the wall that you'll need to take out.
2. Prep the subfloor: Are you on a slab or basement/crawl space with a wood subfloor? Details on doing this vary depending on your subfloor.
3. Lay the vinyl: Cut the vinyl to the precise shape, using regular scissors. There are inexpensive vinyls that you just tape down, using a special double-sided tape, around the edges.
4. Restretch the carpet: You need tack strips along the new edges of the carpet, and the carpet attached to them.
