Anyone used the Dream Home laminate from LL?
Comments (70)I had NVP Delaware Bay Driftwood 10mm installed in two bedrooms in my condo in Toronto. Bought from LL. Had seen it in a friend's place and thought it looked wonderful. Great customer service. I had them install. Looks fabulous until I got a call from a friend about the 60 Minutes segment on the unacceptable amount of a formaldehyde gassing off the boards. I remember finding it curious that the boxes that the planks came in were marked as "Made in Austria?" Wow, and yet so cheap... Tomorrow I will be setting out a testing kit to determine the amount of formaldehyde in the air (it will take three days of testing but can I even trust the results?). Who to trust now? People tell me not to take chances with health and to simply pull up the boards, dump them in the landfill and start over. What an expense. What are other people doing? I should have bit the bullet and put in hardwood....See Morejanepa or anyone with Wilsonart HD laminate, Crystalline series
Comments (5)Sorry for the delay, but this is the third time I have tried to continue my answer. I did take more photos of the countertop and cabinets, but after uploading them to my server I felt that they do not add anything to my first photos and the ones on the earlier post. I did a search of all of the Wilsonart HD Series and I have included an URL to one that says it goes well with all woods. Is the grain in your oak doors very prominent, and are they a natural color, or are they stained? I think going with a laminate that is on the light side or the dark side will not show as much 'movement'. I work at a building supply and our samples of the Wilsonart are 3" x 5". I originally selected a different pattern, but went to a local Lowes to see if they had my choice made up on a display countertop. They did, and I immediately changed my mind. If you can see some display countertops I think that will help you very much since they also have the cabinets with the countertops. I do have a beveled edge, and unless the glue would for some reason 'melt', I think you would have to take a hammer to make a chip. Make sure your fabricator is top notch to insure a great countertop. Good luck with your choice. I am very happy with mine. Comments (59)Hi JaneinColorado, I'll take some pics tomorrow when it's light out when I don't have to use the flash and can hopefully get a better picture for you. It doesn't really have much veining, it's more of splotches of gray, white and black. We just did a normal edge and I colored it with Sharpie to take away the small bit of brown and white that was showing. I'm sure it would look good with a rounded edge too and it would be nice not to have any seams on the edge, but in our case it was much less expensive to go with the traditional edge profile. It worked out because I actually prefer the look square edge anyways :) Another option that I considered was the Formica basalt in a honed finish. The dealer near us had the Wilsonart soapstone in stock, so I was able to go and see a big piece in person. It's so hard to tell from the tiny samples, so it was helpful to see it in person. We were in a hurry so we just went with the Wilsonart, but I'm sure the basalt would have been pretty too....See Morehd laminate
Comments (7)If you are referring to the prefabircated type that you pick up at the store then, I can tell you that I have it in my current basement and they were also used as a builder basic in a previous town home that we owned. We don't use the counter space in the basement as a work area so I can't really tell you how it is holding up to everyday kitchen use. But we had a soild almond color prefab counter in the condo we owned that we used for 7yrs. It held up pretty well. When we moved in there was a slight crack by the sink from previous owner. It never got worse. It didn't show scratches and there wasn't a stain that I couldn't get out. For a builder quality counter it really did the job. It was just boring to look at. The condos were built in 1985 and some of my friends still have the original kitchens. If you are thinking custom counters from HD then you should get other quotes from other laminate dealers. HD does not always have the best price. They have a way of making the basic price per square foot look very attractive but by the time you upgrade you may be able to find a better deal somewhere else. We replaced the almond laminate counter top in our current home about 3yrs ago. We first got a quote from HD and when all was said and done we wound up with Corian and an integral sink from a kithen and bath place for only $200 more than HD custom laminate. Below is a picture of our Lowes instock cabinets and our HD instock laminate we use in our basement for extra storage....See Morecindymao129
