Floating Engineered Hardwood Expansion Q.

My husband and I are installing floating engineered hardwood on most of the first floor of our home, about 1100 square feet. Some of the flooring went over vinyl, some is going over marble, and some is going over existing hardwood. The existing floors are all in horrible shape and would otherwise have to be removed completely, so that's why we're doing the float. We're using an under padding and gluing the pieces together for additional stability.

So far it's been working well, but we have a question about future expansion. My husband's been leaving an expansion space around all sides, as recommended. Our baseboards will be installed over this to conceal the gap. There are some areas, however, where it's impractical for us to leave an expansion space: a sliding glass door in one area and the doorways that transition into our ceramic tiled kitchen.

Is it safe to forgo the expansion space in a few small doorway areas? We're doing a muggy summer installation and the first floor of our house has a large dry basement underneath it, so I can't see buckling being an issue in these areas in the future. But we're concerned that forgoing the expansion space in some areas would contribute to future buckling anyways.

We're talking about maybe 5% of the total flooring being sans expansion space and the rest would have healthy room to grow.

My husband adds this to our original question:

"I am installing a floating engineered hardwood floor. On one wall, there is a sliding glass door, the base of which is about as tall as the height of the flooring plus the pad and made of metal.

I understand the importance of leaving a 3/8"-1/2" gap around all sides to all the floor to expand. However, next at the sliding glass door, I can't cut into the door casing or anything because it is metal. If I leave a gap, it will look ridiculous. Similarly, because the floor will come up level to the bottom of the door, I cannot cover it with quarter-round or other molding. I could probably use a cap/threshold piece glued to the floor, with a cut in it so the floating floor can slide and expand underneath it, but since the sliding glass door is not set back to the wall and does not occupy the entire wall, this could look funny too (i.e. along that wall I will have ~3.5 ft of flooring, then 6 ft of threshold, then another 3.5 ft of flooring)

So, two questions: First, does anyone have any other suggestions for molding or trim pieces that might work better here than what I have already considered? And second... oh boy, I'll probably get shouted at for even asking this, but... if I am careful to leave healthy expansion gaps on the other three sides, can I go flush to the door for just those six feet of that one wall and get away with it? I am installing in August, so house should be close to max humidity, and these floors do not have moisture issues, so I don't expect a huge amount of expansion, but I am still very nervous to do this..."

So we basically need someone with experience to either suggest the proper threshold pieces (a doozy for that sliding glass door) or tell us if it's acceptable to forgo the expansion space in a few small areas.

Use an end cap transition molding along the metal threshold. It is in the profile of an L on its side.

You can get an engineered floor that is as good if not better than a solid product. We produce solid unfinished flooring but we also produce unfinished engineered flooring as well. Solid flooring typically has a 1/4" (6mm) of "sandable" or "usable" surface. Basically after you get 1/4" deep you'll hit the nail heads and so you can't sand below that point. Our engineered unfinished product has a 5mm wear layer. However, the engineered product is already pre-sanded to 80g which means once installed the amount of sanding that takes place is minimal. On a solid floor, most contractors will need to do a rough sanding to get the floor even, then one or two more cuts to get it smooth. Even if you have a very talented sander he is going to take 1/32 off in his sanding on the solid floor. That equates to roughly 3/100 which is nearly the difference between the 6mm and 5mm usable surfaces we began with. So in essence, you are getting very close to the same "usable" surface. Not to mention the engineered is more stable, will keep you from having to install a subfloor as it can be glued directly to concrete, eliminates transition issues between hardwood and tile or carpet AND should take less time to install. An undercut saw or a toe kick saw okay. I will have to get myself one. The installer does not seem to care who his man hired and what his man did. My own contractor on the job said common sense would tell you. It is good product by Award Flooring. I was told this wood was very stable. my enivironment is not too moist. no no moisture problems. i have old subfloor up there and it is measuring fine. i had another man come up and take some moisture readings with his good delmholst. I have a patina relics wide plank 6. distressed engineered. It is in my cottage so why would i have put real hardwood. I have dogs this is the ideal flooring. Now i am hearing that the cracks-from what i have read-could be the glue settling and people walking on it. How long would it take glue to settle? This floor has been down two weeks. From reading about I now know get the subfloor and your wood reading no more thatn 4% in the difference. But this might be slightly different with wider planks? maybe. Do you know anything about glue drying. Could the cracks be the tongues breaking? My installer will not listen to me and won't tell me what he did with the float in install. I found nails-oh yes- in the hallway. the hall is not finished. So what do i have now a combo job. This was not a cheap job. I paid for complet flooring in the place plus some fiber flooring. thanks for your input. Greatly appreciated. I have a show down with this man on wedneday i have asked him to bring along his installer. He refused to cut an expansion gap and insists the floor does not need it. Thank you so much, everyone, for all your comments so far! I was supposed to receive emails for follow-up posts so I apologize for the delay. It's amazing but while shopping for my hardwood floors, I visited several floor stores and only one had mentioned that installing hardwood floors over plywood in a hi-rise condo is not the best approach to installing hardwood floors but in fact engineered wood is the way to go. Someone2010: Thanks so much for your advise but could you clarify? I would be willing to send him a registered letter and take him to small claims court but what exactly would he be fixing? Would he come back to create an expansion gap (even though the expansion gap wouldn't resolve the buckling issue), refund the cost of installation, or refund the cost of installation and the material so I can replace it with engineered floors (and through another installer of course)? idrive65: I could get into other things that he has said and done to me but he clearly does not know how to respect women. Brickeye: I'm not sure if I understand what you mean. Could you explain what "grade" you're referring to? Since my first post, my floor guy has tried to counterattack by threatening to send a list of extraneous costs. If I have already completed payment with him, does he have any right to send me an extra bill? I have already requested his extra bill and will now start the process of documenting the case for court. I have a long battle ahead of me. I would like to complete this project before the year ends so I have a new contractor that has suggested removing the boards that run parallel to the wall and reinstalling pieces that allow for the 3/4" expansion gap. On the boards that run perpendicular to the wall, he has suggested cutting them to create the gap. Since small claims court will delay this project considerably, is it wise to have my current contractor fix the problems now and try to bill my floor guy later? We need to move in soon. ajsmama, your Brazilian Cherry floors are beautiful and so is your trim and steps. Thanks for sharing. The trim looks so nice since I am used to half my carpet covering my almost 3.5" trim. Laurie, That price sounds great and the height and width sounds perfect. I will have to look into this since I want my baseboard to be self-primed. My floors are now totally bare. My brother owed me and he finally decided to help me out by removing the carpet, pad, tackless, and trim (he labeled the trim to save but it is not in the best of shape). He left the trim and quarter rounds on the Porcelain tile foyer areas and told me the flooring guy will have to decide what to do with that since my brother sells, repairs and installs carpet for a living. He removed all the bad CVT tile in the utility room so someone can install tile that was not water damaged and cracking. He left the destroyed trim there that is so water damaged. The flooring guy can't come by until Thursday. I have to try to clean the floor again since it was SO dirty. I got all the nails off the floor and one layer of dust, plaster and dirt and the little Styrofoam balls that must have fell from the ceiling and were under the padding under the carpet from 20 years ago! I swept so now tomorrow I will vacuum. I hope a painter can start before the floor is installed. Squirrel, I agree with you that I invested so much money into a new floor that I also feel I would be happier with new taller trim or at least new trim. Thank you everyone! Anymore input and/or pictures would be appreciated. Thanks for being there for me. My little dogs are in my bedroom with me since that is where my computer is now. I can't work and I need to work. I ran out of toner and all my files are downstairs in the hot garage. I really wish someone would start my floor first before the painting since the dogs and me are all stressed out seeing the ugly cement floor everywhere downstairs. I wish I was also removing the torn linoleum kitchen floor but that is a project for next year, along with a new dishwasher since mine is almost 20 years old and leaks and does not match my stainless steel French Door refrigerator.

My husband's reply to floorguy:

"My only concern with an end cap is that since the sliding door is not set back from the wall, I either need to put an end cap against the entire 13' wall, which I really don't want to do; or else the end cap will be parallel to some of the flooring, which I am worried will look weird."
