Ancient gas wall heater making loud crackling noises

I live in a really old apartment building (circa 1950) that is heated by an old gas in-wall heater (it says "cozy" on the front and that's all I can tell you about the brand). Recently it has started to make very loud crackling sounds...it sounds like the cracking sound you might hear from a campfire but it is way louder. It sounds like someone just threw a pine branch on the campfire and it is igniting full force. I sleep about 15' away from it and the sound woke me up in full panic just now.

Is this something I should be concerned about? It usually makes some pops or hisses some but it hasn't been this loud or consistent before. It does happen to be really cold outside (-10 F) so could that have something to do with it? I don't smell any burning smell or see any smoke or anything but I'd rather not wake up to my apartment being on fire if I can help it.
