Comments (6)Joann, My symptoms are major hair loss, moodswings, irregular periods, itching, severe intolerence of cold, weight loss/inability to gain weight, and a feeling of something like a tendon snapping when I swallow. I went to the endo today and it was the worst expierence in my life. I showed him the report of the radio active scan and he said "thats wrong" he basically didnt listen to anything I said, cut me off before i could finish and was blamming everything on either my smoking, or stress.He was so rude and tuned out it even piss-d my hubby off! Needless to say I will be calling around for another endo who will at least give me the respect of letting me finish my sentence and hear my complete history....See MoreAnyone had their thyroid removed? Comments (17)Hey Mini- I had thyroid surgery in late 2006. The biopsy results went on about abnormal cells, but it was enlarged enough as to be visible on one side. The surgeon had specified an out-patient surgery, but I questioned it and ended up staying overnight. I was concerned about what was going to happen, but when all was said and done, it was not so bad. I had one side of the thyroid removed during a morning surgery. They kept me on humidified air thru the night because you can suffer from a sore/dry throat. I had no problems with my voice and generally felt groggy/fuzzy. In the hospital they took blood every 2/3 hours and checked my blood pressure. I had a little trouble with side affects from the anesthesia, but other than that I was not even in pain. The doctor had made the incision low on my neck, just above the V of my collar bone. Most folks donÂt notice the scar. I was surprised that the doctor did not require me to cover the incision or even put antibiotics on it. I was self conscious of the visible staples, but strange enough, it was easily dismissed as a silver necklace and no one seemed to notice it (or they did not say anything). Once the staples were removed, I was told to keep tape on it for an additional 7 days. This was to keep from straining the newly healed area. I was surprised that I did not have any pain or discomfort. I was keenly aware of the incision and tried not to turn my head too much. Overall my imagination was far worse than the surgery. I was back to work Monday (surgery was on Friday). The thing I did learn is that when you are in the hospital, you may not get service unless you ask for it. Simple things like an additional blanket, being able to reach the call button, telephone or TV remote, getting jello or whatever, you may have to ask for it. Comments (8)Caroline, of course we can be "sisters". I had a successful kidney transplant in January 2012. But I kept having these several-times- a- day "hot flashes", worse than anything I had with menopause seven years ago. My urologist felt my throat and said he felt a one-centimeter nodule. I had no pain or other problems. I then went to a specialist, an endocrinologist. She also felt a nodule and sent me for a sonogram of my neck. It showed seven nodules, five big and two small, the small ones under 2 centimeters. A few days later (last Tuesday) she did the biopsy. I was quite fearful, took a Zanax before, which relaxed me. The assistant had me lie back in a chair and tipped me back, like at the dentist. She cleaned my neck. Then the doctor came in with her needle and a jar for the tissue samples. She nick-named the nodules "The Twins" and "The Triplets" as there were three on the left side and two on the right. The thyroid is in the center front of your neck, just below your adam's apple. She had the assistant spray my neck with something to numb the skin, but I felt every jab. She would stick the needle in , then stir it around and push deeper to get enough tissue. I stopped counting at ten jabs. They told me not to talk or swallow when the needle was in. That was hard.It hurt a lot and I felt a tear roll out of one eye. Finally it was over. She put a couple bandaids on my neck and I was allowed to go home. I took Aleve tablets and kept a bag of frozen peas on my neck for most of Tuesday evening. The next morning I had no pain whatsoever. The tissue samples were sent to a lab that does extensive testing, including Genetic and "Genomic" testing, whatever that is. But the downside is it takes two and a half weeks for the results, so I'm still worrying and waiting. Best case scenario, everything will be benign. Worst case, I will have to have my thyroid removed, but at least I'll be under anesthesia for that. I've been assured one can live a long life without a thyroid, and thyroid cancer is the most curable kind to get. So it could be worse... Good luck, Caroline. Let us know when you get the results. Comments (1)Absolutely. Everything you described is very common in perimenopause. There are erratic swings in hormone production throughout the transition. Estrogen and thyroid are connected, so maybe this has something to do with the thyroid nodule. My experience is that the cycles come less and less frequently. Menopause is simply a marker of one solid year with no periods. An after the fact kind of thing. Good luck, I know it's not easy. I have recently read about "the window of time for initiation of replacement therapy" theory. (Dr. JoAnn Manson) If you think that you want to do replacement therapy, it should be started shortly after cycles cease. But only if you can find a REALLY good doctor to help. It is a complicated issue and every part of your endocrine system should be looked at. Your adrenal glands, thyroid, etc. They all work together....See More- 19 years ago
