Princeton Comprehensive tests

Cousin had one of those done at Mayo in Jacksonville and has been bugging me ever since to do one. I'm up here in NJ now, and have set up an appointment at Princeton.

Gave them my CC number a week ago.. they said would send 24 page questionier, food diary, and 'suggested hotels' list. Got nothing yet.

Anyway, question is: Princeton Longevity Center - all show and no go?

What happens if they tell me I've got some terminal disease? how do you deal with that???

It's a scary proposition. Please help me if you can shed some light.

I had some tests done at PLC last year and the year before. I found them to be very professional. By using ultrafast CAT scans, they discovered 2 minor plaques in coronary arteries. They give you a disc with your results on it so that you can see it yourself at home if you choose. The visualization was very helpful to get me to do what I knew I should have been doing for years. And the consultaion with the doc there was so comprehensive. Although they recommended medication, I asked my regular dr. for a 2 month reprieve to change my diet and add exercise to see what that would do. He said take 6 months. I lost 30 pounds, dropped my triglycerides from around 350 to 170, my CRP went from abnormal to normal. My cholesterol initially went up slightly, which is apparently fairly common when you make big changes like I did. In consultation with the docs at PCL, my dr. put me on Lipitor - my cholesterol is now under 200. I found the whole experience very good. The atmosphere is very low key, you will know your results when you leave - at least I did. They will spend whatever time you need. I have seen the main dr. interviewed on one of the major networks when they did piece on heart disease. When I went back the second year, the plaques were a little different - I had three instead of two, but they were smaller. The dr. thought that the larger of the original two had been reduced into two smaller components.

BTW - I made up my own diet that I call the "Don't eat anything white" diet. No white rice, pasta, refined wheat or sugar. I'm not a fanatic about it, but I stick to it about 80% of the time. I also exercise and lift weights. I feel better than I have in years, and I think that PCL's methods helped me face facts. I have a degree in medical technology, and because of my professional experience, I tend to be very skeptical of anything that smacks of quackery or medicine for a profit. PCL wasn't anything like that at all.

I know this sounds like a paid announcement, but it really is not. It's so funny that you should bring this topic up because it has been a year since I had my last tests. I no longer live in NJ and cannot get the same tests done where I live now. I've been thinking of going back and getting a check-up.

Thanks for your rave review! I'm leaving for Princeton tomorrow -- staying overnite at hotel so I can hopefully get there by 0830!

Your 'don't eat anything white' is essentially low carb, and I've been doing that sinc Feb, '04. I love it. My biggest reward (besides the weight gone) is that I don't have to carry around Rolaids everywhere I go. BTW - Dreamfields Pasta tastes just like regular and is acceptable on low-carb... a bit pricey, but worth it to me!

Dunno where you live now, but back in FL at my mom's eye doctor, I met some folks from Ohio that come back there every year for their checkups! They don't vacation, they just take off a few days and get examined and go right back home.

iforgotitsonevermind, I for one rarely give out personal information, and so I agree with not giving out specific information, however general information (zone/region)gives some indication of length of growing season, rainfall, rainfall pattern etc which can all be helpful. With that said people are only trying to help you, but I'm not going to argue with you as you have obviously gotten upset. Just something for you to think about, Arktrees I do have the following to add that could be of some benefit to you. Allot of trees in containers (I don't know the percentage), are in fact "containerized". These trees are actually field grown, dug bare root, roots pruned, and then planted in a container and given some time to recover before being sold as container stock. I don't know it this is what happen here, but it would seem likely to significantly slow recovery. This is due to the fact that as many or more root are lost, than if the tree was balled and burlaped, so that there is a great deal of regeneration must occur, which is likely to be slowed due to limited sun exposure. It may be beneficial to dug a small test hole with a trowel a short distance from the tree to determine if roots are spreading properly. Obviously if you are only making a small hole, and the roots are spreading well, then this is a minor lose of roots compared to what may have happened previously, and will give you a good ideal as to what is happening below ground. But of course you don't want to repeat this very much. I intend to do just this with our kousa dogwood, did just this for a tulip tree last fall that did not exactly thrive last year. Containerized trees are very common. Our first Fall Fiesta Sugar Maple I planted improperly for our soil. By the time I realized that I had screwed up, I dug the tree up, and placed it back in a container but the tree eventually died. Many months later, I removed the dead tree from the container, removed the soil, and discovered it was a containerized tree. In the intervening time I planted another Fall Fiesta Sugar Maple elsewhere that is doing very well so far, and my discovery of the containerizing of the original explained the growth rings I had seen on the new tree that didn't seem to make sense. The current years growth (at the time of planting in the fall) had been much less than previously years growth. It had shoots of approximately 6-8 inches, while growth rings (can bee sine in the bark on shoots when bark color and texture changes from one year to the next) on other trees indicated that they often grew a great deal more than that. So apparently the tree had been dug from the field the fall before i bought it, planted into a container, and allowed to recover for the summer, and fill the pot with roots. The tree was then shipped late summer to my destination, at which time I bought it in the fall, and planted it. Then last spring it grew about double what it had the previously year (the recovery summer), but still not as much as it as has been visible in other larger trees. I bring this up, as it may give you some clue as to whether the tree has in back been field grown, then containerized. At the least it may give somebody else some ideals for this problem.

I have kept my eyes open for this information, but have not found anything definitive. Almost certainly some of the offspring will be resistant and some will not, but I do not know what the ratio will be. I've seen one statement predicting that the majority of "Valley Forge" seedlings will be resistant, but there was no reference to a study or any formal testing to back it up. The answer may vary depending on the pollen source. As I understand it, American elm is only partially self fertile, so a Princeton tree with no other cultivar around would not produce many viable seeds, but for those seeds, both "parents" would be Princeton, so to speak. If another variety of elm is around, the large majority of the seeds will be the result of cross pollination. Without knowing the genetics of DED resistance in Princeton, I would have to guess that seeds resulting from self pollination have a better chance of producing DED resistant trees. I have one Valley Forge and one Princeton. If I ever get a good sized piece of land, I'll definitely plant some seeds from those two! Sounds absolutely fine to me! 1)-3) No comment 4) The insulation will make little difference as far as sound proofing. If keeping the noise down is a big priority, use a damping system such as Quiet Rock, Green Glue or resilient channel and an extra layer of drywall. 5) If the heat pump doesn't keep humidity below 35% RH, you can always put in a portable dehumidifier. 6) If the inspector is uninformed and therefore insists on a polyvinyl vapour barrier, it won't hurt the system. There's no need to bother with Membrain, which is designed to be effective with fibrous insulation. On one project I did with cc on the walls, the inspector approved it without poly. On walls with XPS, inspectors have insisted on the poly.

I just found this today. I know it was back in 2008 that this was posted. But I hope you may read this still. I am so sorry for the loss of dear Princeton. Thank you for caring for that precious cat. I am a cat lover and am now 70 years old and have 2 strays I took in over 8 years ago. One is now ill and lost weight and has the same problems Princeton had. I know you still think about him and have days of mourning. I still do over the years when I lost a cat to cat heaven. Here is a poem for you and my prayer for my cats before I die. Since I am an old woman and not an old man I will still hang onto this poem as if it were my own. My cats names are Moo Moo (ill) and Dinky Dawg. Please let us know how things went at PCL. I now live in Virginia, but have been thinking about going back to PCL. Thanks for the tip about Dreamfields pasta - I will look for it.

Gina, interesting that you should mention the connection between low-carb eating and Rolaids (or lack thereof). I just told someone this same thing the other day. She was surprised, as I was when I realized that carbs could have been causing my excess acid. I've been eating low carb since 1995Âyikes, ten years!

OK, first the Rolaids... I'm sure that bread, pasta, sugar, whatever was causing the dependency on Rolaids. The ONE time I felt the need for one was after being in a bar where I thought the Coke wasn't Diet...

The PLC experience:
First off, I'd definitely recommend Hotwire.com for getting the hotel. I was really scared because they don't tell you the names, but I ended up in the Chauncey Convention Center & hotel for $72 (normally $116+) Wonderful room, but I couldn't take advantage of the amenities because of the upcoming tests.

Staff at PLC was very gracious and hospitible and friendly.
Having read some stuff, docs there prescribe to low-carb, but the breakfast buffet was mostly muffins, bagels and such. Hmmm. Lunch was GREAT... lotsa low carb stuff.

I was a bit disturbed about being told that I had a wax build-up in my right ear, and then told I'd have a hearing test. Why didn't someone remove the wax build-up before the hearing test??

Told I had too much Iron... got turned down to donate blood three months ago because of lack of iron.... might be that's a day to day thing.

I'm kinda ambivilant if I will do this on a regular basis.

They gave me the "slow up on drinking and smoking" speeches but I know I can get that for a lot cheaper.

The Virtual Colonoscopy showed 2 polyps... they recommend a real colonoscopy within 3 months. I dunno, is that really bad if there's no colon cancer history in the blood family? I think there are a lot of 'scare tactics'... have 2 cousins that are docs, will have them review the stuff and see what they recommend.
