Hello, I have Arnica chamissonis that was hand collected in the wild back in Summer 2006. I keyed this out at the time, it was growing in a meadow near Usk, WA. Not sure if you prefer seeds collected in the eastern US or not. If you would like some let me know! Kristi

Rita, what is your zone and elevation? Arnica likes to grow at a higher elevation or a cooler zone. Arnica montana is a bit more difficult to grow than arnica chamissonis, although both can be used medicinally to the same effect. I find my arnica likes full sun, not part shade. I started some from seed and it has grown like crazy. Once you have a plant or two, the rhizomes will spread and produce many more plants. Horizon Herbs might still have plants available.

Hi J'Lynn, There are lots of different species that go by the name heather, so which one are you thinking of? The most hardy "heather," as far as I know, is Erica carnea. There's lots of differing opinions on just how hardy it is, but it should make it to z4. But a bigger problem than the cold would probably be the dryness. Where I used to work, we sold it as hardy to z3, but recommended planting it in shade and mulching it over winter with pine boughs to keep a blanket of snow around it. It will generally do better in the Pacific Northwest, or somewhere with more humid and "lush" growing conditions. All that being said, I ALWAYS think it's a good idea to at least try anything you really want! Here's some basic info, and below is a cut & paste link to some more information: Erica carnea A species of low, spreading, fully hardy, evergreen shrubs from the alpine regions of Europe attaining no more than 20cm (8in) in height but spreading to 55cm (22in). They have linear leaves in whorls of 4 and bear urceolate, generally pink, flowers in late winter to early spring. The flowering times of E. carnea vary markedly, plants in milder climates being as much as two months earlier than those in colder conditions. Generally, they can be expected to show flower for 6-8 weeks. It tolerates lime and a little shade. All exhibit a dwarf carpeting habit and with few exceptions, rarely require pruning. Care must be taken when pruning as E. carnea buds as early as July. It is safer to prune immediately after the flowers have faded. Prune around the edges and very lightly over the top of the plant.
