Can you dye bath rugs?

I accidentally bleached my tan/beige bathroom rugs ALL OF THEM in the same load UGH..I knew as soon as I did it, that I screwed up! and sure as anything...they now have spots.

but, they are all fabric, no rubber stuff on the bottom. Reversible...I'm wondering if they could be bleached successfully or will the bleached spots still stand out?

If the rugs are 100% natural fiber (cotton,wool,silk), they can be dyed. Do not use Rit!!

I have two bath mats in my guest bath. One in front of the tub and one in front of the sink. I would agree that if your doors will not open and close over a mat, then I would consider cutting off some of the bottom of the door. If you keep this door closed most of the time, it will improve air circulation as mentioned above. In the master bath because I didn't want to cover up the tile pattern in front of the tub by leaving a mat on the floor all the time, I use a mat like you find in a hotel that is towel material. It hangs on the side of the tub when not in use and gets washed with the towels once a week. They are thinner than most bath mats so that might be another option. As far as fecal matter from flushing the toilets, we close the lid before flushing and bath mats are washable. We originally started closing them when we got our first cat and now it is habit. It only takes a second and l realized I much prefer how it looks when you walk into the bathroom.

Carol, it was the Atrovent that did it. I am back on the Albuteral, but I am afraid to use it. I was switched after a reaction to the Albuteral. I only need it a couple of times in the spring and fall. The insurance companies won't let me have anything else because I didn't go to the ER when I had my reaction to the Albuteral, and don't consider hair loss a good enough reason with the Atrovent. I have the Albuteral filled, but haven't really needed it, tho probably should have a couple of times. The Albuteral will also cause me to loose my hair, but I always just figured it was a winter shed when I would have a lot extra in the shower drain. Since I don’t see the toilet in the large bathroom, I will assume there is more than 6 feet of space between toilet spray and the potential rug. I prefer to think of the comfort and style a beautiful rug might add to the room rather than staying away from beautiful items in case an accident happens. You’ve given the home owner something to think about and now he/she can decide what works for their lifestyle and if they prefer to wash a rug or have it professionally cleaned on occasion. In any event, I wouldn’t recommend a rug that breaks the bank or can’t be cleaned for many scenarios.

Can you dye linen drapes?

Unless the drapes are made from linen that has been per-shrunk, you will lose 10% of the fabric size. Also, you cannot really go from dark brown to dark gray without removing the brown color. I assume the drapes are lined. If this is the case, then dyeing them could also distort the lining and make the drapes look warped. If you have never washed the drapes, you should not consider dyeing them.

I dye lots. I use Procion MX dyes. Using non-iodized salt and soda ash, the dye is color-fast. The skirt I dyed navy gets washed with my whites.

I buy it at my local craft store but you can order it on-line. Search 'Jacquard Procion MX Dye'. It's great stuff. Not cheap though. Be sure and follow directions.

DM just dyed her bath towels and bath rug a beautiful deep purple. She used Rit Dye and they came out great. I mean they look brand spanking new. In fact, some of the bath towels she dyed were decorative towels that had some lacey trim and the lace came up a teeny bit lighter which looks so nice on the deep purple.

golddust - why not Rit? Geez, I hope she's not made some major mistake that she can't undo? DM's towels and bath mat were pale yellow and she wanted to change things up a bit. Had the Rit in the house and used it.

Rit just isn't color fast. It's fades out rather quickly and she should be careful what she washes her towels with, due to bleeding.

There is no comparison, long term, over the two dyes. Procion Dye is a professional dye that batik artists use. My DD used to use Rit until I converted her. Now, she will never go back.

Funny, we're just getting ready to dye some things and were just talking about how much we love this dye over Rit.

Lurker here, but I agree, Rit dye is not color-fast. Fading in the washer isn't such a big problem. As long as you wash with like colors, you just get fading, and probably no dye transfer to other dark clothes.

But bath rugs, dampish from standing and dripping can permanently stain tile grout and vinyl floors.

Thanks golddust. I will mention the bleeding of color to her. I think she probably is going to wash all of the purple stuff together as it is such a dark color and I don't think she would wash it with anything she didn't want to have a purple hue.
