web software - what is everyone using?

what is everyone using to create their web sites? i am not happy with the plain jane results i got from microsoft word so i guess i will buy something. have been looking t web studio 3.0 and it looks user friendly and has cool effects, plus its not expensive. i need user friendly but not too expensive.

I mostly code my own HTML and CSS. That's the cheapest thing to do. You don't need to buy anything.

I also like Dreamweaver which is rather pricey.

I tried MS FrontPage a little, but it didn't really produce the results I wanted, and it's kind of a pain to work on the HTML it produces.

What kind of pages are you trying to produce? Personal or business?

Sorry for delay in responding.
I am trying to do a personal web page with the bells and whistles. I used to write my own html years ago when there was no software to do it for us. I created my company's pages for a few years in this manner, then went to Front Page. Now we have another person doing it and using fancy (but expensive sofware), so I got away from it and now looking to do a personal one but really did not want to go back to doing the html scripting. i checked dreamweaver and it is real expensive.

Oh, You are not anal at all--LOL--I'm an electronics engineer by trade and software engineering manager in practice. That makes me really, really anal about data. Many fields in my db are drop-down or checkbox type. When I upgrade to the next version of base db software it will also handle attaching photos and export to HTML web page. Like Excel, it is very easy to add/subtract fields with this program and easy to sort on any field. Here are the fields my db has for each cultivar: 1. drop down for: want/really want/no thanks/have/ordered/auction bid/auction won 2. variety name 3. hybridizer 4. year registered 5. scape height 6. bloom size 7. foliage type 8. bloom season 9. bloom description bloom form nocturnal rebloom extended fragrant awards tet/diploid pollen fertile pod fertile 1st yr grown source property where grown (I've moved and not all plants I've grown came with me but still want to track my experience with them) landscape location (drop down that can be easily customized) additional notes (degree of info here varies by my interest/use of the plant. It might include: parentage, offspring, $ paid, when I expect order to arrive, etc) I'm trying to see if there is a way to link db's with this program so that I could use this initial data as the base for a hybridizer's tool that would link seedlings listed to the parents in the original list. It exports in a standard format so I was thinking about making my data available in exchange for DL trades sometime in the future as I get more of the data verified and/or importing data from other's Excel files to customize a db for them in exchange for DL trades if they were interested in purchasing the base program from Illium (I use the db tool for a lot more than DL too. I use it to keep all my shopping lists, recipes, inventories (books, reading lists, movies, collectibles, etc), to do lists, medical and perscription histories for my family, household/auto maintenance, special quotes, and much more- just about anything you want to organize in a list or small db format and carry with you on your pda. You can password protect any sensitive lists. So its a handy tool anyway. In fact I was already using it for all this other stuff before I decided to use it for DL & plants. LOL- adding plants was just another extension of my already over the top data obsessions...

Hi Lynn Looks like you've done a very good job so far, but I realize you were probably using templets provided by znet. I recommend you learn to do your own html and you will have more control over the way your pages look. Infact you can see what they look like now by simply going up to "view" in your browser and then to "source". Copy it and then paste it in Windows Note Pad. This will give you a visual look inside what your pages real look like. There are so many great tutorials on the internet to learn html and the need for confussing and restricting software is unnecessary. As far as finding a place to put your website, there are quite afew out there, but I would stay away from free ones. They are very resticting and usually your pages are filled with adds and popups. I recommend Boomspeed.com where you can get 100 mgs of storage for $6.00 per month and there are no adds, no popups, no bandwdth limits and you get a guess book and free email. Another plus is a terrific support forum where people will help you with the html too. Thats always a plus as far as I'm concerned. I bought the $99 version of Better Homes and Gardens interior design software made by Chief Architect. Then I got my hands on a copy of Autokitchen, which is what many of the pros use. That may be overkill for you, but I searched high and low for something like you were looking for. Many months searching in fact, and I came up with nothing. Some of the paint brand websites have tools to import your pic and apply color over, but I found they were literally impossible to use in a real life photo. (Try it and you'll see what I mean! I think they would work in a blank room with just walls and a floor ok). If you are desparate and don't want to spend money look for some older used versions of BHG software on Amazon. Some go for under $20 if your computer meets the requirements.

I've used the IKEA and Microspot Interiors (for the Mac). The program I like the best and now use exclusively is the Better Homes & Gardens. It's very useful, even if you have professional help. At my last home, I caught things that my architect missed. Unfortunately, we moved before I got to see that dream kitchen become a reality. Now, I'm tweaking the final plans for the new house & a more modest kitchen. We decided to not get an architect this time because of what we can do with the program. You can do a web search for html editors and there are many free forever ones and also free trial period html editors.

My uncle doesn't know any html, well not before he created this http://www.statmaster.net/ page with a drag and drop editor called web page maker, http://www.webpage-maker.com/ .
He really likes it. It had a 14 day trial period and then he decided to buy it for $39.00.

I use Notepad myself, but it is slow and requires some knowledge of html. I have Dreamweaver and Frontpage 5 but I prefer Notepad, it is just a personal preference of mine, those two are fine.

Just saw your post, I used the free disc that yahoo sent me. But you can download the program from the computer and use it there. It does it all for you. I could Never do code never. You pick out whatever you want and work on it on there program when you get all done all you have to do is hit publish and it does it. Really easy. Only thing is my photos looked great when creating our business website when I uploaded them they were darker and a little fuzzier. Someone said it was probably AOL. Another thing is when I put thumbnails on the pages of the furniture and clicked on it, it enlarges so big on there. Really didn't want it that big for people to copy our things. Hope this helps.

I LOVE WebStudio. Simple and easy to use. I especially like it for the simplicity of reducing pictures to expandable thumbnail images, you can line up and space everything however you want to do it. It comes with a bunch of clipart but you can also import graphics and links. Nice program that I am very happy with. Currently my website is about 90 pages and increases in size and content weekly.

Connie, about the thumbnails: If you're thumbnailing really big pictures they blow up to really big pictures. I use a graphics program to scale down picture sizes to a consistant 4" across. Then when I thumbnail them with the web program they only blow up to that 4" width.
