Oak...get yourself to a doctor. "Pleurisy" is an excess of fluid that surrounds your lungs to help "lubricate" them when you breathe in and out. I had it once....it felt like someone was stabbing me with a knife when I breathed in. Your doc just needs to listen with his stethoscope for the "pleural friction rub"... it sounds like a crispy sound. Then he confirms the fluid build-up with an Xray. He said mine was from a virus, too, (even tho I was not sick before), but also said people with lung cancer can often get it. Mine lasted about a week. I wouldn't bet the ranch on your friend's diagnosis, but have your MD check it out. Good luck and stay healthy!

My old-fashioned doctor diagnosed it right away, after 2 days of his young protoge grasping at straws and giving me Demoral for the excruciating pain - kind of like a hot poker in my side. Antibiotics right away and 5 days and nights in the recliner. Not fun. Now when I'm asked what my pain "number" is, I always refer to pleurisy as the guideline of "10".
