Must Pick Blu-Ray or...?

I see the latest releases on DVD are advertised as either HD or Blu-Ray. Will studios still release standard DVDs of these films? After all, how many buyers have joined one camp or the other, or purchased expensive new DVD players that play both formats? We wanted to wait it out and see which format becomes standard before replacing our player.

This could drive me to the movie theater! LOL

Just get an upconverting dvd player in the meantime if you really need to replace your old progressive scan dvd player . It looks like Blu Ray is currently leading in the format wars , but Universal is still sticking with the HD format . Which is kind of good in a way since competition between the two formats is driving down the prices of both . Standard dvds are also playable in the HD players which upconvert also . I may not have made my question clear. Our old DVD player works fine. I'm asking if I will be able to find new releases that I can play on it. That is, will it play Blu-Ray DVDS or HD DVDs, and if not, will studios continue to release movies on standard format as well as one of the two competing formats?

Mystery! is my favorite, but isn't on as regularly as it used to be-alas. I also like NCIS, the original Law and Order (even with all the cast changes-really like the new Prosecutor), and Law and Order Criminal Intent. I like The Closer, but can never remember when it's on and there are a lot of 10 pm shows I would probably like, but I go to bed early (school starts early, don'tchaknow). House Hunters and HH International are fun, too. We actually know some people who were on House Hunters. Such a disappointment-they had already bought their house and the other two houses were just filmed for the show. Not sure if they are all like that, but this one was not entirely honest. Too bad.

I posted a couple of times about the scam a large hospital here tried on first DH when he went in for a femoral bypass. When he was admitted, we specifically asked if the hospital accepted our insurance. The response was "yes". Shortly after his surgery and discharge, he got a bill for several thousand dollars for services during surgery. I called the hospital, and they told me that the hospital and surgical bills were paid by our insurance, but anesthesia services was a separate company that did not accept that insurance (Aetna). We refused to pay the bill, saying that we were told that insurance covered it. Well, he was scheduled for a second surgery on the other leg, and when we went in, I asked the anesthesiologist if he was in private practice or worked for the hospital - his answer was that he worked for the hospital. I just happened to meet a person who worked on Medicare Fraud. He mentioned a scam that many hospitals work, by creating a holding company that separated many services into separate corporations - the hospital in general, anesthesiology, radiology, etc. That way, they would have the hospital corp. sign on to accept Medicare and other large insurance companies, but the other corporations would not sign on to insurance companies - thus allowing them to bill patients for services they assumed were covered by the hospital. I called the hospital Administrator's office, and left a message spelling out this information to his secretary. Also said we were not paying fraudulent bills, and I would call Aetna, and the local TV stations if they sent another bill. I then called Aetna and reported them. My husband was at work.....a couple of hours, he received a call from the hospital, saying that they were "forgiving" the bills.

Is it just me...or do men prefer wood over white cabinets?

I never considered white cabinets for the kitchen in my forever house either because I once owned a home with oak cabinets, painted white, by the prior owners. When it was time for me to sell that house, the housing inspector hired by my buyers rated the kitchen cabinets "substandard" due to the lack of a factory paint job. Ever since that experience, I've been a fan of wood-stained cabinets. I also think a preference for wood-stained cabinets over painted cabinets is a generational thing. My parents (in their 80s) think the only reason to paint wood is because the wood is of such poor quality that it doesn't stain well. Not necessarily true but that's how they think and their home (as well as the homes of all of their friends) is full to brim with stained wood--stained wood doors and moldings, stained paneling in the den and stained wood cabinets on the kitchen and bathrooms--and the end result are dark and dim houses by today's standards. Lots of people, me included, wound up painting the paneling in the den to lighten things up a bit!

Pick things by their amount of selection available. Floors are always first. It starts with a piece of patterned fabric that you like, because you know the palette works as a whole. All three of the above statements make sense to me: - Choosing the thing that's hardest to get /hardest to get exactly what you want seems logical. With that in mind, it seems that paint would always be last (or near last) because paint shades are almost infinite and are widely available ... as opposed, for example, to slabs of granite. - Floors make absolute sense because you want them to mesh well with what you're using throughout the rest of the house. - Finally, beginning with an inspiration (whether it's fabric or not) makes perfect sense. Personally, I have a color scheme and a theme in mind for my kitchen, and I'm making choices that fit into that "overview" that I've long had in mind. I'll add a couple more thoughts on what should be chosen first /last: - I'm going with a U-shaped kitchen, so I'm choosing the countertop first. A U-design is compact, making the counters more prominent ... whereas, the cabinets themselves are a bit more hidden than they are in other layouts. Doesn't mean the cabinets don't matter, just that they're what you see second in a U-shaped kitchen. - It seems to me that cabinets should always be either first or second (at least third) because they are the most expensive item in your kitchen. Since they are an investment and are so much trouble to change, they should be a priority. - I think appliance SIZE needs to be chosen early on, but the specific appliances can wait. - Finally, it seems rather obvious that backsplashes, lighting and drawer hardware are decisions that can be put off. These things are important and add personality to the room, but they're things that can be changed out without major effort.

Yes , all dvd releases are available in the standard format which are also playable in the new high def players . I have no problem whatsoever getting any movie or tv series from Netflix in the standard format . So you have nothing to worry about . Releasing older as well as new movies in the high def format just gives the movie studios the opportunity to sell movies twice to the same customer who wants the extra clarity of 1080p (or 1080i) high def in their viewing experience of their favorite flicks .

Thanks, that's what I needed to know. I couldn't believe studios would in effect stop selling DVDs to people who didn't jump to buy a new format player.

Hmm, this leads to an interesting question: If only a small percentage of buyers chooses one of the new player formats, how long might this "war" go on?

Paramount just announced it's abandoning BR in favor of HD.

For all practical purposes, only a couple of years, maximum. It only took a year until Philips started clearing inventory of its Digital Compact Cassette players. The competition, from Sony, MiniDisk, has hung around longer but in no way could be considered a commercial success. More recently, DVD-A(udio) battled it out against Sony's SACD format to be high-fidelity "king of the hill". Buyers stayed away in droves and both formats are on life support.

The rush for quarterly earnings at most companies quashes most notions of continuing to improve an unpopular format for several years before giving up the ghost. Now if you're not a hit out of the box, you retool in a year or so and try something else.

Between Paramount and Universal declining to sell BluRay and the pr0n industry voting largely for HD-DVD (because it's cheaper to produce HD-DVD content than BluRay content), I think BluRay is not long for this world. It may continue to be a niche format for the PS3, but you'll likely never walk into Blockbuster and see an entire wall of BluRay disks.
