cable or wireless networking over a long distance?

I live in a rural area and I have a very long driveway. There's a cable box at the end of the driveway, but Time Warner says they won't install cable because our house is more than 300ft from the road. If I could convince them to go as far as they are willing to go, would it be feasible to build a box-like structure to house the equipment there, and prolong the network with a cable or wireless the rest of the distance?

If so, how far would be realistic? The service I'm most desperate to get is internet. TV and phone would be nice, but not essential. Any advice on how to go about networking? would pulling a cable be better than a one-direction wireless signal?

I have a 900' long drive, when I dug a trench for my utilities I added a third run of conduit with pull ropes for "down the road" cable.

A few years ago when we needed broadband internet, we bit the bullet. Comcast came out and pulled the cable no charge.

I'm not that knowledgeable about wireless cable outside the house. Sorry I can't offer much advice.

I would ask them how far they'd go, I'm guessing 300' is it? At least they could go that far, install a box, and you can continue the run to your house. I'm surprised they won't at least quote you an installation for the additional footage over 300'.

You have a coupe options:

The max allowable distance for Ethernet (over Cat5/6 copper is 100m (about 330')

Fiber can run MUCH longer distances, depending on the specific type and speed.

You could run coax that far, on your own, but you would have to worry about signal loss and noise.

They can be run arielly or burried.

If it was me, I would build a powered hut just off the road and run fiber. (If I could not mains power it, I would look in to solar cells and batteres with the appropriate voltages. (All cable modems and media converts that I have seen are DC devices. No need to run DC->AC->DC, it is just a waste of enegy.)

I consider Networking to have a minimum of two resources that cooperate over a wireless or wired connection. In the degenerate case I think one could consider a printer connected to a USB port to be networking, but I thing most would not call it that, however, if the printer had a wireless interface/support and the computer printed via that wireless interface, I suppose no one would argue it is a network. I consider your case/example to be a simple, yet real, Network, you are Networking. In my house I have three computers interconnected via an Ethernet network (Wired), they can share, and do: files and printers. Each accesses the Internet through its own interface, that's because I'm using dial-up and the telephone wiring between rooms provides all the networking I need for my Internet connections.

Maybe the first thing I would do .. Go into the device manager(right click myComputer & select properties) and look for yellow exclamation or red stop errors. While there under Network Adapters you should see two adapters; One will be your wireless adapter and it probably says 802.11b/g/n and manufacturer name. The other network adapter should say something about 'Ethernet adapter and manufacturer name. Double click the Ethernet adapter and then look around for probably a check box that says something about Disable this device. I would disable that ethernet adapter because you aren't using it... that will stop that Network Cable Unplugged message,,, and might possibly be the conflict - if so you might get lucky and your wifi will connect after a reboot. Ummm, what else might you try. The Event logs in your computer management window might give you a hint what's wrong... thats accessable by right clicking myComputer and select Manage. You say you never have added hardware... hardware that would use an irq would be things like a portable hard drive, a flash memory card, anything usb, a pc-card slot device, a seperate monitor. Try unplugging things attached one by one to see if one of those might be causing the conflict. Hopefully its not your wifi card, but if after trying to eliminate the conflict and nothing else hardware wise stops the error message maybe you could disable the wifi adapter in Device Manager and then if the error message instantly goes away that would be a good indication its bumm or maybe rolling back or reinstalling the driver might fix it.

Update: 1. Original router Dl-524 on XP was dying, then died. 2. XP machine now functioning as wireless with new router (D-Link WBR-2310 -- it was cheap because store running a special!). Set it up during 2-hour phone call to ISP (Verizon) and done manually -- he wanted to bypass the CD w/router even though the package said "use CD first." 3. Used Recovery Partition pre-installed on Vista machine. But when restart, still same 3 messages as before: a. apsInitialize b. apsGetInterfaceCount c. WLAN Monitor stopped 4. Google searches with the above (a, b, & c) gathered pages and pages of hits, some helpful some not. Many lead to dead-end in forums closed to outsiders -- a subscribe-here type. But all summaries were related to errors appearing after person installed, or attempted to install, a D-Link router Bottom line: Because using the Recovery Partition didn't get rid of the error messages, I wonder if I need to swap existing Vista for different Vista (but same model). I'm going to stop by store on way home from office to ask them. I hope original salesman is there as he is knowledgeable, the store guru, and has helped me before. Any thoughts?

Guess I didn't read your post carefully enough. So you want to be your own little cable tv sub station and transmit through out the house.. Not sure if that is possible. Are you on cable or satellite? If your on cable call the cable company and let them come fix it. If they can't go thru the floor I'm sure they could come up with an alternative route. Do you have an attic space?? Very easy to go thru the attic and drop wires down interior walls.

Can you do Dish/Direct TV for cable and perhaps microwave wireless for Internet?? I don't know where you live to say with certainty if either is available.

A wire will be superior to wireless 80211 for applications requiring long distances and good data rates in excess of 54 Mbps.

80211 Wifi is best deployed in relatively short range situations where the number of connections is variable for example- 2000 sq ft home with multiple tablets, laptops where users are not too concerned with getting the best gigabit/ megabit transmission rates.

HD video streams are designed to work with 1 to 6 Mbps which really is the bottom end of Wifi rates.
