Anyone using Byetta?

My doctor is talking about adding this to all the other prescriptions I take. Does anybody have any experience with this? I suspect the price will be horrendous. My insurance company is covering fewer and fewer products and I am pretty sure it won't pay for this one. My prescription for Micardis is no longer covered, but I am unwilling to give it up since it actually works to bring my blood pressure down.

My husband has been using Byetta for about a year. He is Type II and has been for about 10 years. About a year ago, his Dr. wanted him to try the Byetta pen and it has worked so well for him. (Dr. said people seem to either do very well on it or cannot tolerate it, so he is one of the fortunate ones.) He takes a shot (very small needle) before breakfast and before dinner. The good thing is that he has cut out some of the other oral medications he had been taking. For him, it has been a great success in helping to control his diabetes. It's not just the "levelness". It's the support under the floor that keeps it rigid. Any flex at all, and it will crack. It doesn't matter if it's smooth and totally level. It's all about your joists and subfloor. Your joists need to have the right spacing, the right depth, and not span too long of a length. Plus the subfloor needs to be the right thickness. A lot of time, this add considerable height to the installation in order to add rigidity. Your expert should be fully knowledgable about how to do the math to calculate whether or not your home can support such large tile without cracking. If he doesn't mention or understand how to calculate your existing space's deflection, then he doesn't know enough to do the job. Period. Move on to someone who does know how to figure this information out. Or, perhaps DIY it with the help of the pros at the John Bridge Forum.

I have been using Byetta since September 2008...and have lost weight...maybe 50 lbs. The first months were difficult, with the nausea, but carrying that weight was really getting me down. I have back surgery in a week or so, so I am doubly glad that I stayed with it and am going into the surgery minus those pounds. I have always had lows...rarely high-highs, and fasting and anesthia are troubling but will talk to the anestheist today.Cholestrol is also not an easy fix but a work in progress. From most of the meds I suffer side effects...trying oatmeal as of today. I took Avandia for 10 years, suffering a multitude of side effects...and gaining 10 lbs+ a year...so I am grateful for the newer fixes...like Byetta. I have not heard of the serious side effects...but will check it out. Nanny

I have been taking it for about a year. I didn't lose the weight like many people did at first, but I have been very careful about what I eat and now have lost over 50 pounds. I take nothing except the Byetta. I am sure some of you have had the same results I have, with so many meds being put on warning lists. I just got tired, of changing meds all the time, and asked the doc if I could just do the Byetta. It is working fine. My a1c is now at 5.2, the best it has ever been.I have had no problems with my stomach, like I had with some of the other meds. I did well on Glucophage for several years, but it started affecting my stomach. Trying to change from that, was when all of the different warnings came out.I also was very lucky, to not have a day, when I got nausiated. On the Byetta forum, several people, recommend eating a few soda crackers or tums before your injection, to settle you stomach, but I have had no need to try, so can't speak of it first hand. I wish you well in trying it. I think it has been the biggest difference in my health, than any other medication I have ever taken.

I've been on Byetta for a year now, and I love it. In the beginning, I had to eat within minutes of taking the shot, it helped controlled the nausea. Sometimes my blood sugar would shoot way down. I adjusted, it really took me a month to. I was happy that I could eat fruit and pasta, two things that would normally send my blood sugar through the roof. I did lose 15 pounds. If you do feel sick to your stomach check your blood sugar, to see if its because it dropped down, usually I would eat some crackers and it helped. I take mine in the morning, and before my evening meal. With Byetta I found that I actually had more freedom, there has to be at least a six hour space in between doses, so dinner time can now vary for me. Also found that I have more energy, and I am always glad I stuck through that first month. Doreen

Thank you Jeanie. I don't see my Dr. again until April so I am not sure what he will decide. I am pretty certain that my insurance won't pay for this. Does your husband's?

Devorah, we have a 50/50 copay on our prescriptions so our insurance does pay half. It is about $200 for a month, so we are out about $100 a month for his Byetta, but since it is working so well for him, it is worth it.
He has always had to keep it refrigerated, but we received a notice from Byetta last week that their new tests have shown that once it is opened, it is OK to leave it out up to 77 degrees, which will make it much handier when going out to dinner, etc.
