Sclerotherapy for leg veins

Has anyone here had Sclerotherapy for varicose and/or spider veins? How did it work for you and did you have any side effects? How much discomfort? How about laser treatments for spider veins? Did that work well? Thanks in advance for any input.

I have had sclerotheraphy three times and will have another one in March. I have had success with the treatment...I know you're probably wondering how I could have success and yet keep going back. Let me explain...the women in my family have a real problem with varicose and spider veins. My poor mother is 60 years old and from her knees down are just horrible...has to wear dark hose to hide. I am 41 and am lucky enough to have access to a treatment such as sclerotherapy to maybe keep from having the same problem as my mother does. I mainly have problems in the thigh area and near my ankles. I make an appointment once a year to have sclerotherapy in hopes to "stay ahead of the problem". The results have been good. The sclerotherapy treatment has gotten rid of the ones I have at the time of treatment; however, new ones do appear. I have never had side effects. There is some discomfort while being treated...especially in tender areas like the backs of the knees and around the ankles. I wear support hose for a week and only take showers...no tub soaks...and do not do heavy exercise. You can walk for exercise at a slow pace after about three days. I have mine done every March so that I will not be wearing support hose in warmer months...tried that and was miserable. Also, you will have some bruising and you will want that to be gone before shorts weather. Good luck!!!

I had this procedure done more than 12 years ago on some spider veins acquired during a pregnancy. The results were fantastic and there has been no reappearance. I don't remember any discomfort as the needle is very small. I wore elasticated bandages for a period of time and also scheduled this during the cooler months so that I could wear pants. Don't hesitate and good luck!

Did you have a hospital stay and were you on intravenous blood thinner (heparin) there? Did your doc have you fitted for a circulation sock for the leg? How often are you seeing your doc now? Have you had ultrasound on the leg? A venograph? How much has the clot shrunk? Has an underlying cause been diagnosed? Seen a hematologist and been tested for underlying hereditary or secondary problems in your ability to form blood clots normally? Deep Vein Thrombosis is serious. And there are long-term effects. I've had 2 in the past 25 years and am now on lifelong coumadin therapy. Just having a DVT can cause you to be susceptible for more DVTs in the future. Doctors are NOT knowledgeable about this. There is a good Yahoo group for DVT sufferers. I forget the exact name of the group - but you need to be discussing this with fellow sufferers. If you had a large clot and you have been released from the hospital, then most likely you are out of immediate danger. The remains of the clot should by now be adhered to your vein walls and will not break off easily. You may have vein damage due to the large clot. Ask to be referred to a hematologist as well as a vascular specialist. As for the blood thinners - ask to be referred to an "anticoagulation clinic" to oversee your coumadin regimen. Doctor's offices are NOT equipped to oversee this effectively. If you are out of danger of embolism, then start getting exercise as soon as you are able, to help strengthen your veins and get your circulation back to normal. My dad has had a lot of issues with veins in his legs. He had a minor surgical procedure a few years ago -- I don't know what it was called -- and now, I'm sure you're going to be happy to hear this, he has to wear special knee-high stockings most of the time. No one can tell, since they are obviously under his pants, although unfortunately he now can't wear shorts in the summer (still vain -- no pun intended -- at age 75). They're very tight and hot in the summer, but I'm pretty sure he has to wear them every day. Hopefully you won't have the same problem!

In the same vein as mosquitoes, what are you doing about chiggars?

Hate those bugs more than mosquitos. One year I got about 90 or so bites and had to go to a doctor for a shot because of the incredible itchiness. I make sure that there are several fire ant mounds alive and well around the property, since they patrol everywhere and do eat chigger eggs, flea eggs, etc. I do not stand still in ankle-high grass since the chiggers can climb up on tall grass and climb onboard any animal (me) that the grass leans against. I do spray Deep Woods insect repellent on the shoes, socks, and cuffs if I am going to work out in their territory. Deet is a wonderful thing to be able to use in such warfare. When I do get the welts, I brush some of the Liquid Bandage on the welt, and it sure does help. The welt itch can last 2 weeks for me.

Sorry I didn't get back yesterday. Four hours of driving only 115 miles makes for restless legs and a tired brain. I just re read your post and realized I haven't done foam. When I first with a doctor in Beverly Hills in the late 80's, he only used only one syringe of a stronger concentration per visit and no compression. It was the best treatment I ever had. I've been treated by four or five doctors since that use a weaker solution and compression without the same results. In general, don't take anti inflammatory meds for a couple weeks because they counteract the treatment. I've always driven and they tell you to walk. I'm curious if foam requires compression, guessing it does. If you don't like shots, this will be difficult. The needles are tiny, so it doesn't bother me. It should burn some as they are injecting but I've never found a ton of pain afterwards. Lastly I'll say there are a lot of schmucks in this business. Make sure you vet your doctor well. I'm looking forward to hearing how it worked.

No discomfort other than a little pin prick feeling, effective, affordable. No bruising for me....

Unfortunately, most of the doctors around here are now only offering the laser treatment (once purchasing the $$$ laser, they are reluctant to continue to use saline) and it costs lots more...I just heard Dr OZ say on an Oprah show a week or so ago that one is not more effective than the other, the difference is in price to patient.
