Please Post Floor Pics of 5' wide boards or 3.25' wide boards

I am going to cross post this to the Kitchen Forum and the Decorating Forum since I need to order the floors in the next few days while their is such a great sale.

Please Post Pics of your 5" wide plank floors or your 3.25" wide plank floors to help me make a decision.

My three rooms are only 573 sq. feet total and each room is only 12 feet 3" wide. Two rooms have low ceilings and one room has a cathedral ceiling.

Would having color variation in the Brazilian Cherry floors using wide boards in a small room, make the room look chopped up while less wide boards will make the room less choppy or is it the reverse? I think wide boards that are stained and all one color make a small room look bigger but I am not sure with a floor that has color variation if it would have this effect and maybe will have the reverse effect?

Lynn, if the 3.25" boards are short in length, then it might look choppy with color variation. My room is 275 sq.ft and that is why I went with 5" wide planks. They are longer and the Amendoim has a lot of variation. Unfortunately my floor is not installed for me to show you how it looks.

Kge9, thanks for letting me know that is why you went with the 5" wide boards. I wish the BR-111 Triangulo Engineered Hardwood floors would come in a 4" wide plank since I think that would look best in my rooms. I may call around to see who has a 5" wide plank flooring down in their showroom in Brazilian Cherry for me to look at or just take a chance. At least the 3.25" wide boards now go up to 48" long rather than just 42" long like they used to.

My DB had the same problem at his old house(it was new house & looked great at 1st-he's moved) anyway after a bit the neighbor above him put in a big cement pad & barbq right so they all sat & watched his backyard. He planted 4 fruit trees that in summer "covered" the problem but it is often nice in winter & when we ate outside 1 xmas, we had "uninvited eyes" then neighbor got sick & let his hill go to pot & other neighbor sold & new people never did a thing to the hill. So maddening but you are just stuck. So in Ca. where we don't have acres & storage barns, "fences" indeed do make for better neighbors or at least you don't have them staring at you. I love the pic Jeanne put on & you can incorporate some of that probably on the side walls as going up & down those hills gets to be a chore. It is a great place for fruit trees tho!! Thanks for telling us how you got the boards, I couldn't imagine as they are usually in 8 ft sections. Jan

Angelclub, Now that I redid my 5" wide floors with the long boards (BR-111 Brazilian Cherry Engineered) since I had water damage in my home with Triangulo 3.25" wide boards that were all so short, I am disappointed in how the installers installed the floors in certain very noticeable areas with seams lined up and patterns instead of random and stacking similar colors to make long boards look longer. I did not know what you meant when you mentioned you like to be involved as you like floors to be random and now I totally see what you mean. I wish I could redo a section of my new floors. I also now wish I went with the wider boards only because they were longer. This post popped up in my email box as someone like a comment I made so I was happy to reread the comments.

Hi jeri, I have not talked with the installer yet on my decision in no longer gluing the floor but floating it. My neighbor has a floated 5"" wide Merbau hardwood floor and I like the way it feels when I walk on it. It has no hollow sound and feels solid but has a tiny bit if cushion so it does not feel like I am walking on my hard tiles in my two foyer areas. My other neighbor's very dark 5" wide plank floor feels very hard to walk on since it was glued. I am hoping my installer agrees with me and feels it is OK to float the 5" wide Triangulo Engineered 1/2" thick with a 3 MM sawn cut veneer of Brazilian Cherry on top floor ( have a concrete floor and installing a sub-floor would cause problems in my door ways and raise my floor much higher than my Porcelain Tile foyers so I decided to go with an engineered wood floor that has a sawn cut veneer). I just hope I can refinish it if I ever need to since BR-111 says you can refinish the floor a few times and I am hoping the floating installation does not affect this.

The strength aspect is one concern, for sure. I don't knead that often but still the downward pushing would be a concern. Never thought about the sliding back and forth thing, either. Don't these fancy pants slides have stops built in to help offset the tendency to 'glide' when you are working on them? But man, Beagles and a2's look sturdy. So, a2gemini: would you feel like your pull out would be strong enough to stand up to some rolling out of cookies or kneading of bread dough? Williamsem: that table is kind of neat. The price, though. eek. DH would no doubt bring up the question of how much bread we could buy for 500.00. donaleen: good link, thanks. I'm going to check that out more later. Right now we're FINISHING OUR POWDER ROOM!! WOOHOO! The first room to be completed in this place. 15 months since the gutting began.

Kge9, I have only 2 days to buy the hardwood flooring but now I am leaning towards the wider 5" flooring since the shorter boards may look choppy like you said. I went to a neighbor's home to see her floors that are Merbau (gorgeous) and 5" wide and amazingly despite the individual plank samples in my home looking so wide to me, her floor looked beautiful and her family room is identical to mine. I wonder how much 5" wide Merbau is? I just don't' want to spend more than this floor is already costing me since Northern NJ installers are so expensive I am finding out and the cost of moving the heavy furniture is also upping the total installation cost.

kge9, are you gluing down the 5" wide boards or floating it? Will you be sealing the floor?

Thank you Kge9 for letting me know that you are sealing and gluing the floor. I have decided tonight to go with the 5" wide BR-111 Brazilian Cherry Triangulo Engineered wood boards but I am preferring the floating method for the little bit of cushion it will give me. I am waiting for my installer to call me back before I order the wood tomorrow to go over the number of reducers and T-Moldings I need as well as if it is OK to float the floor since we had planned on gluing it down.

Lynn, congratulations on your decision. I think you will be very happy. My brother-in-law floated his floor a few years back and he is very happy. You can't tell when you walk on it.

kge9, thank you for letting me know that your brother-in-law is very happy with his floated floor. I think I will be also and I am starting to get excited. I am just a little scared since at the last minute I decided to go with the wider board due to having less seams from longer boards and I hope I still get the mosaic look in colors that I love.

I stopped to see a Merbau 5" wide floor 3 miles from my home in a store installed in a showroom which has the mosaic look in colors and I was surprised it was 5" wide since when all the boards were installed nicely, it was beautiful and did not look wide. I am happy now. This floor was the same as my neighbors that is floated. I took my shoes off and it made me realize that I would be happy with a floated or glued down floor after all. The install price will be about $1000 more for the Merbau than the great price I got for the BR-111 Brazilian Cherry so I will try to stop obsessing about what the floor will look like and anticipate soon this always dirty beige carpet will be gone and I will have a pretty hardwood floor.
