Built in Closet

Hi, we are planning on doing a built in closet - 26 deep and maybe 5 feet wide. Cali closets gave us a quote of $5500. For the crap they used it seemed quite pricy. We're looking to a woodworker to do it now that I know "the guts" and dimensions of rods,etc. Might anyone know what I can expect to pay for something like this? Simple maple doors over the hanging areas and 3 drawers with shelves otherwise.

Any info ins appreciated.

I can't really add constructive advice for you, but I just have to say that $5500 sounds REALLY expensive. Especially for the inside of a closet which will presumably be out of sight for almost everyone almost all the time.

A/C will also run through the duct, so perhaps I should go back to the old configuration - no issues and it was there for over 20 years. Should I use a rigid metal duct (the old configuration) or would you recommend something that is insulated to prevent condensation, etc? Thanks

We used Diamond the same company that does Kitchen cabinets--it depends on how much room you have in the master closet. The shelving, cabinetry, etc. that Home Depo and Expo sell is not as deep because its really designed for existing small closets as a retrofit. We used regular cabinets in cherry and put a granite top on it. No backsplash just mirrors. The drawers are deeper, and I got lower cabinets with pull out shelves. Great for sweaters. A corner lazy susan works great for purses. My husband likes the big drawers for Levis and t shirts. The same cabinets look spectacular in the bath.

Well, it's not exactly to my taste, but it is clearly a well-crafted and expensive piece of furniture. There is no way to make this look modern simply by refinishing it or painting it...and doing so might cheapen the look and make it stand out more. I agree with lazy_gardens that it would benefit by losing the mirrors on the doors. The easiest fix for that would be to take the doors to a cabinetmaker and have him remove the mirrors and install solid panels that would match the wood species and the finish. I'm ok with the center mirror, but the closet would be a lot cleaner-looking if the frou-frou trim at the top could be removed without leaving obvious damage or unstained wood showing.

Good evening, I am trying to outfit my wife's closet with closet evolution shelving from home depot. My problem is the size of the closet. Can anyone point me in the right direction if all of this would fit in the closet that is 77" long by 52" wide. Hi, we got a similar quote from California Closets for a large master bedroom closet. My Dad, a retired cabinet maker, had already told us that the materials they use are basically crap--MDF and laminate, but we wanted to find out what it would cost.

We're in the process of pricing out real wood & quality materials from a custom cabinetmaker in Queens, New York. I think it will be less than California Closets--note that we will be doing the install ourselves with my Dad's help. I'll post the sizes and price once we get them. We're in a New York City suburb so that may make it a bit more expensive.

Try organizedliving.com. They have system called FreedomRail. I used this for our walk-in. I used the design tool as a base. I acutally added an IKEA 14" deep 3 drawer chest in the closet which eliminated the expense of the drawer units. It also now looks like a room instead of a closet. I put an venetian glass mirror above that.

The quality is better than Closetmaid and it still was a little pricey. If you are interested in lower budget, you can get the same results with the Closetmaid rail system.
