I would suspect it was probably due to heat stress -- you've had an extremely hot, record-breaking summer, I believe. A lot of plants will not set fruit well or at all under conditions of extreme heat -- peppers, eggplants, and tomatos definitely won't, and I suspect the same is true about squashes. Hopefully, with the cooler weather, perhaps you'll still have time to get a squash or two. Other possibilities include insufficient calcium in the soil, just like tomato blossom end rot, and excessive nitrogen.

I'm not a grandmother yet, but my own mother was in many ways in your same position. She spend every weekend with my kids when they were little, either at her house or mine, and she later moved very close to us. You aren't being ridiculous at all, it seems to me what you're feeling would be very normal. My mother felt the same way. But many kiddos do want to be at their own home or with their friends more as they get older, and that's a normal feeling for them. When my kids were in middle school there was an upswing in how much time my kids spent with their grandma. They'd get sick of me and stomp off to grandma's house to be told they were wonderful and perfect and get waited on hand and foot. My kids are nearly grown now - one about to graduate high school this school year and one about to graduate college - and they love my mom and visit her a lot. But it's not the same as the old days when they spent every weekend with her and would have spent more time if they could. My mom misses them, but she understands. She's so very glad she spent that time with them when they were little, the memories are precious to all of us. Enjoy those grandchildren. The years fly by way to fast, both for the parents and the grandparents. Your grandchildren are so blessed to have you.
