Repair dresser - desk - console by replacing top?

I recently purchased an entertainment center console and the movers scratched the top. The furniture store is going to send a repair person out to fix the scratch, initially said that the repair person would touch up the scratch with matching stain, but now is ordering a new top from the manufacturer because the owner has not actually seen the scratch and does not know how deep it is. Does this seem like overkill - replacing the whole top of a piece of furniture to repair a scratch? Is this typical? Anyone know whether the structural integrity of the unit will be compromised post-repair?
