Wood Grain Look / Faux Porcelain Tiles? Pictures? Opinions?

Hello everyone! We are considering flooring options for home construction at the beach. The house will be a vacation/rental home so sand will be tracked in. I love hardwood floors, but leaning towards porcelain tile flooring for low maintenance and durability. I've seen some 6 x 24 and 12 x 24 "wood grain" porcelain plank tiles online and I am curious...has anyone used these tiles in their home? Pictures and feedback are greatly appreciated. Thanks! :)

I have a friend who has this in her entry, kitchen and family room. It has a great look and is easy for her to maintain. seems like a great choice for a beach house! It does give the same kind of warm feeling as wood flooring even though you can tell it is tile. Neat idea...

I just posted a question on the kitchen forum about this!!!

We are thinking about putting it in. Believe me, I've put LOTS of thought into it. I've heard great things. Never seen this distressed tile on a floor, but I've see other plank styles in tile stores here in upstate NY.

The grout does worry me a bit...

Tell me the tiles you're considering...

This is a little late, but it came across Provenza W-Age tile that offers stair treads. A 24" wide piece was $100 though at a local tile store. It's a very pretty tile if you like the end grain look.

Chispa, I like that because in the picture it looks unglazed or matte and a non gloss is what I'm after. I know this is a rude question but on a scale of 1 to 10 in prices where would this fall a sf? Thank you all! I think I need to find a deal on unglazed color through (homogeneous) porcelain wood look tile. Most I looked at were outrageously expensive but I did see some in the $4 something a sf range. I may have to give something up like color variation or rectified. There is much contradiction on line explaining the glazed and matte technique so IÃ¢ÂÂm going no further with that. I just know that I want something where a chip isnÃ¢ÂÂt going to show much. IÃ¢ÂÂve lived with many a tiled floor in the over thirty five years I have been in Florida and hate those chips that happen where the color difference is wow in a bad way. So I think (still not a 100%) that IÃ¢ÂÂm looking at unglazed porcelain with a MOH of 6 or 7Ã¢ÂÂ¦I donÃ¢ÂÂt knowÃ¢ÂÂ¦ As well as the rest mentioned above in my 2nd reply. My second choice will be a matte finish that I guess is glazed and the tile itself is not color through.

I know this thread is a bit old but I wanted to chime in as people are continuing to debate and google-search the decision between wood floor and wood-look tile. I am a Realtor and I don't think this is necessarily "just a trend." Wood-look tile is continuing to change dramatically and can be quite impressive! I often see investor-flipped, new-construction, or standard pre-owned homes/condo's with updates, etc. In the past year, I have seen a big increase in wood-look tile. Sometimes it looks good, other times, just okay. When it is of lower quality, you may as well just do a cheaper tile. I absolutely think laminate is on the out, unless you are getting a higher quality. If you go cheap, it looks cheap and feels cheap. Families today often want updates, nice finishes/fixtures, and the idea of also having something that looks great, but also durable, is a big plus! So, I would say, go ahead and do wood-look tile, BUT, do it right! Invest in the higher quality product and be sure to take in consideration the grout color. A lighter color looks more obvious AND you have to seal it to help keep it clean. A medium-darker color is less obvious and easier to keep looking good year around. I am in the Fort Worth, TX area.

I vote for floating, click, wood look, luxury vinyl plank. I especially like the style with knots and chatter marks. Lay it throughout the whole house, on the diagonal, with no thresh holds. That's what I did. I can clean the entire house in approximately five minutes with an electric leaf blower. Porcelain tile is more durable however it is more expensive to buy, more expensive to install, and more expensive to uninstall. Also, some tile is extremely slippery when wet whereas wood grain LVP is not slippery at all. Five years later I am happier than ever I chose grey driftwood luxury vinyl plank for a house with dogs, kids, beach sand, and lots of wet feet. If the house gets inundated from storm surge and ocean water gets inside, I can unclick the LVP, clean and dry the subfloor, and then reinstall the same LVP and it will look as good as new.

amylucey, I'll be sure to check out your post in the kitchen forum.
I haven't picked out any samples yet, as I am in the very early stages of researching the wood look tile. I really like the pictures of your samples. The subway tile, marble and the flooring tile blends nicely together. I think I need to just jump in and order some samples. :)

amylucey and cool springs farm, The grout she chose is the same color as the tile, which is a medium brown w/ grain.
Actually my other neighbor put in wood flooring in their family room/kitchen and later said he wished he put in the tile instead for the look and not worrying about water and scratches from his dog. Good Luck!
