two year old grandson

I am a photographer and my office is in my home. I am fortunate enough to live close to my daughter and be able to watch my two (almost three year old) and 1 year old grandsons.

I do my best to respect the rules and try to have the same rules in my home as my daughter does in her home to make it easier on the boys. My daughter is a wonderful mother and the boys adore her but for the last two months the two year old has become increasingly more attached to me. He cries histerically when either his mom or dad comes to get him. Tonight for instance I got him excited to go home but when the time came he didn't want to go. My husband was going to walk him to the car but my grandson got me by the hand and wanted me to go with him. I walked him to the car and he cried and would not let go of me crying. This happens daily and it is an emotionally draining experience.

Before anyone asks my son in law and daughter are wonderful with the kids. There is no abuse..mental or physical and that is what confuses me and frightens me. I am afraid I am causing my grandson to prefer me over his mom. I don't give junk food, I make him take naps and there are rules. suggestions and comments are appreciated. I don't want him to be sad and I know it has to stress my daughter out.

Have you talked to your DD? Maybe she is spending a bit more time with the 1 year old and the other child feels left out. Maybe Mom and the almost 3 year old can occasionally do a day together without the 1 year old. Do you watch these kids all day etc? What about a daycare for the older one, maybe not everyday but 2-3 days a week. Just some thoughts.

Children go through stages like this especially at that age. Two of my grandsons would stand at the bathroom door and cry all the time mom was taking a bath. My sister in law practically raised her granddaughter, she would cry when the Mom came to pick her up. When she was at her home she would cry "Mommy" for her grand mother. It hurt the Mom to hear her children cry and call for someone else, but they all got through it just fine.

Have you ever painted rocks with him? My grandkids went through an "everybody needs a paperweight" phase and painted every rock they could get their hands on. Sometimes they glued googly eyes on the rocks as well. At 2, I'm SURE your grandson would have fun with a rock, paint and a brush...got time for him to do one for his Mom for Mothers' Day? Another time, we wrote things on the back of rocks and left them writing side down in public places. They said simple things like "Hi" and silly things like "Hey! Put me back, I was sleeping!" and (for some reason) historical notes like "Thomas Jefferson wrote the Declaration of Independence" and then laid them beside a tree on a public sidewalk or at the edge of a planting bed in a parking lot. Then, when we went back to those places, they'd look to see if "their" rock was gone...most of the time it was which was a never-ending delight to them! Doesn't take much to entertain kids, does it? But, that's the fun part of being a grandma, isn't it? ...doing silly, fun things with the GK's. Looks like YOU have the grandma role down pat with your dressed-up rocks!

A 4' square of her own, edged so that the plants "can't run away" filled with edibles -- onions are a great idea since they can pretty much survive in spite of being pulled up every couple days to see if they've grown. A tiny sprinkling can is also useful, especially if she has to toddle 20 feet to the big bucket to refill. It's amazing the distractions that can be found in that twenty foot distance. firstkim is so right about the weeding. I played 'plant identification' when DD was two (what is the name of this leaf?) with much repetition, but unfortunately she never forgot the first time she waved a dandelion in my face and I answered, "Oh, it's a dam dandelion!" For several years those plants were all called damlions.

Happy belated 4th, TM! Your cottagey patch looks positively picture perfect! Love those HHs and the daisies - a great cottage combo. I noticed the little guy right off - what a cutie. : ) I know what you mean about the stone path and shoveling snow. After we built our home I got the notion to make a similar path up to our front porch. The first winter snow fall brought me to my senses. ; ) No way could I slide that flat headed shovel cum snow plow over those rocks without jarring my shoulders beyond a quick tylenol fix. Went the concrete route, too, but we are now planning to break up the long expanse with some of those flat, man made cobblestones. I'm determined to have a more cottage look, some way, some how. : ) Kathy, cute story. I showed my neighbor some of my compost bins full of worms and she didn't quite share my excitement. I remember when my 31-year old DGS was that age...very long and slim like his dad. DD couldn't find any jeans to fit, but one day found a pair in the "free" box at a garage sale. And they were a perfect fit. Of course, when she tried to find them in a store, no such luck.
