Is This Forum being Moved?

I read in the suggestions that there was an interest in moving the Grandparent Forum to the Senior Forum. Is that going to happen? I just joined here today and would like to know so I can keep up with it.

Hi Dancey,

This is my first time coming to the grandparents forum. It's apparent from the dates on past posts that this is not a very popular forum.

If you make things for your little grandkiddies come and share 'em with us in Crafts & Decorations... it's very friendly :)

I like the Retirement, Vacations and Step Families forums and they all seem to be very slow. I did visit the Grand Parents forum, but we are waaaaayyyy past grandchildren. They are grown. :o)

LJ: It is rather unfortnate that you had such an unrewarding experience from Winter Sowing, and really it is because you did not Winter Sow. The point in Winter Sowing is to put your containers outdoors in the winter and let them go through freeze, thaw, or whatever nature throws at them. Keeping them in a greenhouse that does not go below zero will not do it for those plants which require a period of freezing (cold stratification) to germinate. That includes many of the native perennials, coneflowers, etc. I would like to comment on some of your lessons learned: You said: Don't plant too early -- even if the plant comes up, holding them in the grow cells causes them to be slow when put in the ground. The idea is to plant early - in the dead of winter (some people plant at Winter Solstice), so the seeds can have a freezing period if required, or several freeze&thaw cycles to loosen their seed-coats. If the seedlings emerge when nature signals it is the right time, they will take off when you put them in the ground, because they are already acclimatized to that environment. When they are transferred from a 'protected' environment (like a greenhouse) they undergo more stress and will take time to get over it i.e. be slow when you put them in the ground. You said: Unless you are happy losing plants, try to plant them so they can be easily separated. I am going to plant mine all in separate grow cells next year. Many seeds are so small you cannot sow them separately i.e. petunias, poppies. Winter sown seedlings are so hardy you can simply pry them apart and either plant them to grow on for a few weeks, or you can do the HOS method which is described in Wintersown.org. That way nothing is lost. Sheila, there are many people in your zone who Winter Sow. The best things to start with are hardy perennials, which you can grow on over the summer, then plant out in fall for flowering in the summer. There are some annuals which are easily winter sown: Nasturtiums, sweet peas, petunias come to mind. Other more tender annuals like zinnias must be sown in the spring - they just cannot take the winter. You will also have to start tomatoes, peppers, etc. indoors - even here in Zone 5 we need to do that in order to get ripe tomatoes before the snow flies. Winter Sowing is not just a matter of containers - I use all sorts of things. If you have not done so, please consult Wintersown.org and read Trudi's guidelines for selecting seeds suitable for Winter Sowing. I started Winter Sowing in earnest in 2006 and I have gardens full of plants all wintersown except my bulbs. If you start studying the information in Wintersown.org now, you will be able to get lots of seeds through the garden exchange forum, and you will find it a most rewarding experience. Hey, Denise, where do you find your coir? I'm still leary of using this, as the supply might not be a good one and there are salt contamination issues. (Big Ole Scardy Cat, I!) I've started buying VF-11 in the gallon size, and since ALL my hoyas are still outside, I've not been feeding since October. They are not even getting much water, but seem happy. Those of you who are relatively new to this forum might ask OUTSIDE! What is she thinking of??? Well, I'm in SoCal, and I hang my hoyas in a tree. This year I had a burst of growth, and four, or more can no longer be moved. They've jumped ship into the tree, headed North. I've had some leaf yellowing from the cold, but other than that... no damage to speak of. Kerrii opened a seed pod in November, the silly thing. I got home there was barely five seeds with fluff left. I still have another developing, at this rate of plant-reproductive-intelligence, it should open in January!

Susanne, you've got the Latin name turned around....it's Datana major. :-) These busy little pests turn into a rather plain brown moth, sodbuster. But regardless of that fact, if you value your azaleas, you had better get in there and remove those eating machines! They won't sting or bite, so just pick them off and fling them somewhere where your lazy birds can manage to find them.

It's taken my sisters and I, well mostly the one sister, a good six months or more to clean our mom's house out and get it on the market! You've got to break the huge chore into "bite-sized" pieces, starting with 1 cupboard.

I have suggested we have a Senior Forum, which could cover a lot, from grandparents, medical issues (not political), travel, empty nest, retirement and oh so much more. There are seniors who travel, stay home, have to take care of the children, or for personal reasons, who never have children, but still have to deal with young people.

I hope this forum isn't being moved. I'm a new grandparent, but I'm not a "senior".

And I do have a wonderful 2 week old granddaughter whose living with me so I get to see her every day.

I claimed that "I" wasn't going to be like those "other" grandparents. "I" was going to keep my head on my shoulders and not act the fool.

Boy am I eating a lot of words.....

Hi PJ! And Welcome to the forum! Even if it is only the two of us.lol I was told this forum would not be moved but there's very little activity here. sigh I sure wish there was. I am a Grandparent too and enjoying it so much! Congratulations on your new Grandbaby!! And it's a girl! My youngest grandchild is a girl too. I keep her three days a week for my dd while she and her hubby work. Don't worry about sounding and acting silly!! lol I think we all do when those grandbabies come along. I still do and I've got 5 grandchildren, hubby has four, so we have 9 altogether.
So PJ how is your new little granddaughter doing anyway? And how is your daughter? Tell me all about them. I would love to hear. My granddaughter's name is Aeryn and she's 18 mos. old and such a little doll. She has dark brown hair and blue eyes. My daughter is age 37 so she didn't start her family until late. We are all so tickled for her that she finally has a child.

I just read your My Page thingie and see you're from Texas too! How great! Where in Tx. are you? I am in a small rural town near Madisonville, Texas which is about halfway between Houston and Dallas. We shop in Bryan/College Station a lot.

Hi Sus!! This is not a very active forum but I still like to come here and Brag! *G* Tell us all about your granddaughter!!

We had Aeryn this weekend and had so much fun. She's 19 1/2 mos. old and such a delight. We live on a farm and have a huge yard. She loves to be outside playing and watching the cows. Right now she's amazed at all the acorns that have fallen to the ground. I found an old bucket so she had fun picking up acorns and putting them in her bucket. ;) She tried to feed them to the dogs! lol We have two blue heeler dogs that she loves and they are so good with her.
