Am I crazy to do Slipcovers in Chenille?

Hi there, I am new here and hoping I could get some advice. I apologize for the long post. The first part is about fabric, then second part about brands.

Should I do a Chenille Slipcover? I really wanted to do a pottery barn style sectional for our family room but with two very active boys (6 & 8) I cannot see doing canvas and having it look nice or last long. So I was thinking of doing the slipcovers in a chenille -- but I haven't seen this anywhere. Is this because it looks strange or is ill-fitting? Should I just give up the idea of a slipcover and do the upholstered sofa with a skirt?

Part II. I have read the posts on Lee, Rowe and Clayton Marcus and I am consdering one of the above for a family room sectional (I know the arguments against sectionals, but it works in our space and we are not moving). I am having a bit of a decision making problem b/c I can't decide whether to go with the lee which is 2 x the price of the rowe. We have a friend in the furniture business and he said that Rowe quality is fine and that they have a good product. We had a "Domain" sofa for 12 years and while the back pillows are looking a little crushed, overall it held up pretty well and we were happy with it. I can't imagine this will be a forever couch, but I want something that will withstand some jumping on (when my back is turned) and look nice and last 10 years.

Thinking about chenille bedspreads from my long ago youth, I would think it would wear down in the places most sat on and not look as nice after a while. Also I would think active boys would snag the chenille bits and pull long strings which would not look good.

Lowe's may have seeds year round from what I've been told. They won't be clearance racking any of those this year. We've got orders to keep the shelves stocked and neatly organized. I think it has something to do with the economy. I've already started collecting my own seeds. I'm not saving them yet, but spreading them where I want more of something next year. I'll start collecting once the breadseed poppies are ripe.

Hey Amberley, Scrappy, & Bmorepanic (& anyone else in this MD/VA/DC)...we have around 30" here in Western Howard County. Drifts are quite a bit higher...the one we measured was 36" high! My DH just started slowly snow blowing our driveway. We have a fairly long drive, so it's going to take awhile...he figures it will take him at least 2 days to do it all! Our dogs refuse to budge from the porch...we have to push them off to "do their duty" on the snow rather than the porch! My DD tried throwing Ruby (the female) into one of the drifts...but she stayed on top and daintily walked down & off the drift! Heavy snow! But, we have a fire going and I just made hot chocolate for the kids (they just came in from playing out there-13 & 15 years old and still playing in the snow, I love it!), so we're doing great! I also made a big pot of chili for tomorrow and now I'm making pineapple casserole (me) + Roman Holiday (DH & kids) for tonight's dinner! Amberley, it sounds like you're making good progress b/w the demoing and the snow shoveling!

I think your pool guy is crazy :) If mottling is a concern, stay far away from colored plaster, including grey. Pebble Sheen / Pebble Tec (the real things) will both look great years and years down the road if installed correctly. It' all relative to your situation. If spending the extra is not a concern, stick with sheen. I will add that some certain projects of mine look better with a colored plaster than they do a sheen...some tuscan style homes and french chateau projects needed that old world mottling look.

sdkath, My husband and I are in the process right now. He even took on the task himself of the plumbing and electrical. that is the only thing we regret. Not because it was difficult, just a lot of work on his part working 10 hours a day and then coming home and working more. We started late July and are almost finished. What makes us think 20% is that our lowest quote was 38K and we are doing it for 20k. Ours is simple, free form, a couple rock ledges, play deck, seat, no water falls, etc. but we love it and it's going to be great for us. I agree, do your homework......Most subs are eager to help and they know all the steps them selves and know all the other subs. Take them a glass of tea, pull up a chair and talk to them about their work when they are there and pick their brain for other subs for the other steps. Schedule work for the days you can be there, Since ours was simple, each step was a one day process for each sub. A lot of PB's will help with owner builds now in our area because it's so popular. I think folks are catching on.....Make sure they have a license and get a signed agreement and quote before you start work. Never pay until all work is completed. If someone needs money up front they probably don't pay their bills and don't have the credit to get your materials. The most important part is a soils test if required in your area and good engineering for your plans. The rest of the steps are pretty simple.

Love chenille! I have a leather sectional in my familyroom now and a chenille sofa and loveseat in my livingroom. I always had chenille while my kids and were growing up. They would eat on the sofa, color, polish their nails, etc. and the sofas always looked brand new. I would blot spills with a damp papertowel. There isn't a more forgiving fabric for sofas IMHO. And if you have pets (I have a 20 yr. old spoiled cat), their nails will not pull the fabric. Also, the most comfortable!
