not sure of your price range but i recommend hancock and moore. i have bradington young in my family room and it is good, but i have hancock and moore in our basement and the furniutre is magnificent. it has held up to kids/dog and a cat and is made in the usa it is soooooo comfortable and you can get it in many sizes/depths etc. there is a store in northern va called "the keeping room" and the owner duane is one of the most furniture savy and honest salesmen i have ever encountered--got my hancock and moore there

I share your frustrations with furniture-buying! My husband and I have been looking for a few months now, and since I'm only about 5' 4", I don't like the deep seats of many of the sofas out there. That included the H&M, unfortunately!

The best leather sofa that I got to actually sit on was a Legacy Leather, something like the Austin style, but I'm not positive: at any rate, it is an 89" long sofa and a bit bulky for the size of my family room. The seating, however, is firm but very solid and comfortable! It's the kind of sofa that I could just sit and sit in! This particular one is on a great floor-model sale right now (Orlando area), but DH wasn't convinced. Legacy is made in Canada, and I don't know the source of their leathers.

We tried the B-Y 84" Sheffield sofa, but it is only in third place behind the Lee Industries sofa that I think I'll buy (possibly a 2 cushion, 78" slipcover sofa with the down package seating).

Because both my husband and I have our back issues, we've been specifically looking for lumbar support, as well as seating that's not too low, and a seat that isn't so deep that one tends to sit on one's tailbone in a slouch to be able to lean against the back.

I'm having someone come in to help me figure out what size sofa and recliners I can get into my FR so I don't make some expensive mistakes. In addition to the Lee sofa, we're also considering the BY Fischer High-Leg Lounger which has just the tiniest bit more lumbar support for us than the H&M Miller Lounger. I am disappointed that we probably won't be getting any H&M furniture: I hear the company builds a superb product.

All of this comfort stuff is so subjective! Good luck, and keep reading here on various brands, etc. It's hard work. And I'm glad to see that dcollie is back posting, because I learned so much from his lengthy and informative posts.

Buying leather furniture can be scary..I have many years experiance in furniture so here are a few tips.Loose seat cushions are a positive feature..look for zipper access on seats and backs..count the springs 5 good 6 better..investigate the manufacturer..any questions fire away..Art

Scary is right - I'm terrified! Leather furniture is costly, and takes me some time to decide whether I like it, and I'm frightened of taking the plunge and a couple of weeks later finding that I hate the things. Or discovering that the "hardwood frame" is really chipboard and cardboard. (And the salespeople don't welcome close scrutiny with a blade!)

I'm contemplating some Canada-made leather furniture made by Distinctive Designs (available via Costco.ca). Have you encountered this manufacturer in your wide experience?

Leather furniture should be considered an investment. Please take the time and investigate carefully the true source of what your buying. Many retailers will not give you specific information on exactly who is the manufacturer and with a money back guarantee this information is correct. Because they source from many suppliers; domestic & import, and as part of the agreement will not share this information. My advice is to never buy from these retailers if your considering your purchase to be an investment. Buy only from a manufacturer that will provide detailed information on the exact construction of the exact model/style your considering to purchase.
Of course comfort is very important part of your purchase, but in many instances the manufacturer has options that you can tailor the comfort to your needs. But you must be able to have a direct line of communications to the factory and most factories will have a customer service department. Be diligent in your research and choose wisely.

Hi all,

Thank you for your great suggestions and advice. We are hopefully going to go out looking today and plan to visit the Keeping Room; it took me long time to decide if I wanted leather in the family room. As far as costs go.... we just finished paying off an interior decorator for our living room, my husband is still swaying from sticker shock, we can easily stay under what we paid her no matter what we purchase, and I do not want to go through that again.

I will keep you posted on what we find, we tend to be extremely slow when we search for furniture, which is why we had decided to go with a decorator for the LR.

You may want to consider Whittemore-Sherrill which is a division of Sherrill Furniture. Not sure of prices since I have not priced in a while but excellent leather furniture.
