Micro Fiber Furniture that bleeds on clothing

I recently purchased a red, micro fiber fabic chair and ottoman. The color is rubbing off, I contacted the store, they exchanged it for another one and the problem is still there. I love this chair set so I thought I would ask if there is anything I can do to stop the color shedding. I noticed it on my PJs that are white. The color came right out when I washed them. Is there anything I can spray on the fabric; would scotch-guarding the chair help.

Did you ask the store for their advice? I would assume it's because it's a brand-new item. Do you know if it's cleanable at all? If it's anything like clothing it would stop bleeding after a couple rounds of cleaning...hope this helps!

I've cleaned maybe a thousand pieces of microfiber furniture and I've never seen one that faded color. Could it be possible that what you are seeing is fibers that are sloughing off? If you could examine under 10x or so magnification, this could tell you a lot. Ultra-suede microfiber is made by electrostatically deposting short fibers over a glued substrate. It's possible that not all of them reached the glue. But it's also possible this is just a poor-quality fabric and will not wear well.

I don't think it really matters what brand you get as they are all virtually indestructible. I got my first batch 10-15 years ago at Lidl's (it's like the European dollar store) and I still have a lot of those yukky green microfiber cloths. Some have been lost or stolen, but the rest are still going strong. I tend to like the terry cloth type for floors and the smooth ones for dusting and polishing. You can use the smooth ones in the workshop, but earlier poster was right any sawdust or sanding particles will ruin the terry-type (the smooth ones work so well for between sanding tasks that I don't use the oiled cheesecloth anymore). Try a few versions out and see which type you like best, and for what tasks. If a certain color turns you off, avoid it, because these things will be with you probably for the rest of your life. It's like carpet, it doesn't really wear out--it uglies out. But who cares enough about cleaning cloths to replace a ugly cloth that still works fabulously.

peabody1, I have the same problem using the yellow Costco microfiber towels on mirrors. They leave tiny fiber debris that really shows! I bought some kitchen microfiber towels that are sold online @ Costco and are waffle weave texture. THEY work fantastic! I plan on buying a few packs of them to use for cleaning I like them so well! I'll continue to use the yellow ones for car washing or heavy cleaning etc... Hope this helps! BTW, Costco refunds shipping costs if you don't like something and have to take it back to the B&M store.

They can be used and washed hundreds of times. I wash mine in the regular cycle, warm water, strong agitation, regular detergent, Oxi Clean, and extra soak time. I rinse twice and put white vinegar in the softener dispenser, to remove any hard water residue that could stiffen the soft fibers. Wash them separately (no other towels or lint-giving fabrics). I tumble dry low and did not notice any shrinkage with mine. After years of scrubbing, they can become less fluffy as some of the fibers mat down, but they still work great for lots of cleaning. I have different brands, different sizes and textures for different uses. But my main microfiber cloth is the pack of 10 yellow ones in the Costco automotive aisle. I have 30 in active use and 3 more packs stored just in case Costco quits carrying them.

Yep, they have a "grippy" feel to them. My son refuses to fold them, because he hates the way they cling to his hands! Do NOT wash them with your towels, you will never get them separated. I have a bunch and wash them on their own. If you have a Sams Club membership, you can get huge packs of them there for $10, its' a terrific deal. Otherwise I've also seen them at Walmart. You can check in at the Cleaning Forum, too--if you search on Microfiber you'll get tons of ways people use them. I love 'em, and use them for all sorts of things--I have yellow for icky jobs and green for dusting/cleaning things that are not icky. Happy Cleaning, Cj

I would have to agree that it would take much more than just seating on the a microfiber material for the color to bleed onto anything. Try taking a damp white terry cloth and rub on the material, if you see anything red on the cloth then let it air dry first before trying to wipe off the red color off the cloth.
As bobsmyuncle says you could be experiencing some of the fibers being pulled from the microfiber onto your cloths. And this experiment can help determine this.
