Geez, this is about 85% garage door opener problems! I get the impression that if you have or buy a garage door opener it's guaranteed not to work right! Here's some good advice to all of them. Disconnect the darn thing and get off you duff and close the door the old fashioned way, you probably need the exercise anyway! :-)

Thanx, I hope nobody takes my post serious. I never knew those things gave users so much grief. But what can you expect, quality control is probably non existant at the plant. Who in Mexico or China has a garage to test them on?

I have been around Garden Web for many, many years but only off and on. Reason being I never felt comfortable with any of the groups. That is until I found this group last december. I saw you were doing a christmas swap and i asked if I could join and Kirk being the generous gentlemen he is said of course I could join in the fun. Well it has been uphill every since. I check in here daily and sometime i post and sometimes I don't. I do however smile alot. I love that I have found a *true* group of junk lovers. I dumpster dived and trash picked long before it was the thing to do so I am a recycler from way back plus I belong to several freecycle groups. I was always taught *waste not...want not!. This group has even helped convert my dh into a junker. Instead of saying why did you............he now says.........hmmmmmmmmmm I think I can use that in a project. :) I used to go to auctions every weekend and I have accumlated a lot of *junk*. I have tons of dishes, glasses, vases, and a lot of odd ball stuff i don't know what I am going to do with it but............ I am also a crafter, doing stained glass, jewerly, mosaics, gardening and woodburning. From these crafts I always have leftovers. If anybody needs some left over stained glass or beads or patterns please let me know i am more then happy to share. I do have one item I have tons of and hope someone can use some..............Rx bottles. They make great storage for seeds, beads, etc.but I have a ton so if anybody would like some pllllllllllllease let me know. My thoughts and prayers goes out to our members who are having trouble, whether it's medicals, emotional or just need a shoulder to lean on. We all need a shoulder once in awhile. When we bought this house 30 years ago this month, it had a porte cochere and a second house in the side yard that had a shed like garage. After about five years, we tore down the old house as well as the Porte cochere and built a family room addition with a bedroom and bath and added a two car garage. The garage faces the side street. We park in our garage. Although it is not overly large (24x24), but because it is fairly organized it holds a lot of stuff. We park in it comfortably with an Acadia and a highlander. It also holds: four whitewater kayaks, two bikes, a refrigerator (the beer fridge); the 2 outside trash cans; various paddles, life jackets and boating gear; boating and bike helmets; some camping gear (camp chairs and stoves); three shelving units ( one for tools, one primarily for DH's swift water rescue gear, and one for gardening stuff). Then there are various paint cans, a few sheets of wood, ice chests, etc. When I think of how much we easily store in the garage AND comfortably park there with just a little organization, it boggles my mind that so many homeowners can't park in their own garages -- and I thought we had a lot of stuff! Basements are not common here due to the water table, but is wish we had one, for the tornados. Our drill now is to don our kayak helmets, grab the dog, and huddle in the hallway. It's a study house and could probably withstand a little one (and has) but you're always worried about a big one coming your way. We do have an attic which is good for storage, but we are gradually cleaning it out -- we are on a five year mission to declutter, give away, and simplify before we move to our (yet unbuilt) retirement home in a few years.

I agree; they should re-name the forum in relation to all the garage door openers that won't work properly. On the bright side I know I won't be purchasing a Craftsman GDO. I started popping in here once in a while when my hubby epoxied our garage floor and we took steps to organize and maintain it. But there was no inspiration here. If my GDO ever fails I'll be right back though!

It is if you want them to call a monitoring service - if you're referring to an alarm system like an Ademco or DSC, that can integrate fire/water/low temp/security, the NORM is to have a phone line so it can contact a monitoring service (or you can set them up in 'pager mode' so they contact your cell, you respond with a tone, then it tells you in beeps what zone it is (typically, zone 1 would be fire) You can also get a cellular product such as Digicell which connects to the panel and uses a cellular network to contact you but there are of course monthly fees. Unless I'm misreading what you're saying. You'd need a run from the outbuilding back to the alarm panel or whatever, if you chose to have phone monitoring, then it'd connect to a phone line, if not, then it would be set up as a stand-alone system. If there was no phone monitoring service then I'd recommend (I would anyway) an external siren and strobe so passers-by could see what's going on.

Why am I out of line because I happened to mention that these things are made by people who haven't the slightest idea of what they are or what they do? Why is that out of line? I'm just making an observation.

mr havac.. you have a point about this being nothing but a garage door opener forum.. its kind of ridiculous.. i came here to get some info on garages.. and i have to sift through dozens of garage door opener posts to even find something remotely relevant.. they should change the name to "garage doors openers" and have a separate forum that is actually about everything else garage related..

Thanks favabeans5, I guess I'm not the only one out of line! :-) I just can't believe that garage door openers in general can be so much trouble as to generate page after page after page of questions. All these forums suggest to try a search and see if your problem has been discussed before. Thats doesn't seem to be happening in this one. Then someone like you or me comes here expecting it to be what its really supposed to be and somebody else says "YOU ARE OUT OF LINE" Well K my A!

Now now mr.havac you are letting it get to you. But do tell us what it was you were expecting when you came to this forum. If you have a suggestion or complaint you can click on the "contact us" button on the bottom of the page to get to the powers that be. You will find door opener problems on the Home Repair and Tool Shed forums as well. favabeans 5 says he came to this forum to get some info on garages but he never says what it is he is seeking. Join in have fun and learn something.

I wonder how many posters on this forum ask 1 question and never come back?

I agree, this forum has turned into the "let me google free garage door problem advice" forum.

It would be cool to have a sticky FAQ thread and require a search before posting. but then nothing would get posted in here :)

im just kind looking around for whatever catches my eye..

like in the kitchen forum.. you see a wide variety of questions about things and requests for help with picking this or that and images of the kitchens.. now how much fun would that forum be if every post was just..

my microwave broke
my microwave doesnt work
my microwave wont turn on
my microwave stopped working
etc etc etc

I've visited this forum on a regular basis for the past few years while we were in the process of finishing an attached garage and building a detached workshop/garage. This isn't the first time someone has suggested a separate forum for garage door opener issues and I'm sure it won't be the last. I agree this forum isn't as sexy as the kitchen forum but then I'm probably the only idiot here whose workshop cabinets are nicer than their kitchen cabinets.

That said there's really no call to get nasty. It's certainly not the fault of the people posting door opener issues that there isn't a separate forum. If you want people to search the forums before posting then respond to their posts with search tips. If you want to see more varied content on this forum then initiate those discussions yourself for gosh sakes. People will read and contribute to things that interest them.

I have a better idea, I'll just leave permanently. I don't have a garage anyway, I have a barn. Incidentally K MY A wasn't meant to be nasty. Up here its considered the same as son of a gun, gosh darn or something like that. Being accused of being out of line just for making a comment is no forum I care to partake in anyway. May you all wake up to perfectly working garage door openers.
