Nail Gunning a Strip Hardwood Floor

Hi!

I am refinishing/replacing 50+ year old white oak flooring in my home. This is 2" x 5/16" strips. The original installation has finished nails w/round heads about 1" long directly nailed to the subfloor.

I had to replace a significant amount of the floor, and being a newbie at construction, decided to purchase a Porter Cable Finish Nailer w/1-1/2" nails (not staples). These have rectangular heads.

Are there any issues with me using this to secure the new wood to the floor I should be aware of? My neighbor thinks I'm an idiot for doing it this way, he says the best way is to go the old fashioned way of using just a hammer and nails.

Any help is appreciated!
