Want to use old Craftsman garage door opener remotes on new opene

I have remotes from an old Craftsman garage door opener from 2000. I just put in a new one purchased in 2006 (took me a while :) and wanted to know if I can program in the old remotes. They look just like the new ones (same shape and number of buttons) but don't seem to want to program. Also, the keypad used with the old opener does not seem to want to program with the new opener. I already followed the instructions for adding a keypad but it didn't work. Any ideas?
