brand of waterbased polyurethane, please

I want to poly the oak floor in my foyer and beakfast room. They were professionally refinished (stained and Polyurethaned) about 7 years ago. At the time the finisher talked me into a satin finish which I was not happy with from the beginning. Since then, I have had pre-finished hardwood floors (with a nice shine) installed in the rest of my downstairs. I realize I cannot match a factory finish, but I definitely want a semi-gloss. I intend to do this job myself. I just need the brand names of some water based polyurthene finishes you have had succes with that is not really difficult to apply. I know Minwax has a bad name. I keep reading about Bona Kemi but don't know who sells it here in Lexington, Ky. I have also read that it should be used only by a professional- of which i am not, thought I have done some small floor areas before. Are there any brands sold at Home Depot, Lowes, Sherwin Wiliams, etc. that you would recommend? Please help!!

You can get the BonaKemi professional use products as well as those from other manufacturers...you just have to do some legwork in finding a flooring materials dealer or distributor to sell to you.

I have heard rumors that BonaKemi is going to start selling their finishes through some 'big box' retailer. I think that would be a very bad idea. Although I do believe some DIYers can safely use the products and get good results, there are others I am sure that should never even think of touching the stuff. At $80 to $110 per gallon, it would be an expensive mistake if all work recommendations were not followed to the letter.

However, whatever product you choose, be sure to prep the floor for the recoat as recommended by the finish manufacturer and use the prep products made for recoating. As a matter of fact, the BonaKemi prep product is called just that...Prep!

If you want to use BonaKemi products, go to the BonaUSA website and search for a distributor or dealer near you and let your fingers do the walking and then you do the talking.

The BonaKemi premium products only come in satin and semigloss. If you want a mirror finish shine, then Basic Coatings Street Shoe may be what you want to use...although BonaKemi EON70 or Traffic in semigloss is about as glossy as I'd ever want to see a wood floor.

Thank you Glennfsc. Is there any other brand you would recommend that could be bought without having to order on line which is the only way I can get Bona where I live?

Hello, we just had oak hardwood floors put down and they will be using a minwax stain. They plan to use Harvester brand polyurethane. We want to make sure they use the best brand possible because we want the floors to last a long time. We are planning to get 3 coats of poly. We dont wear shoes in the house but incase guests do we want to make sure the floors can stand some wear especially in higher traffic areas. Any help is appreciated!! :) Thanks!

I'm in the same boat here as far as having to choose between the two (oil/acid or water based). As part of a gut to the walls remodel, I'm having about 650 sq ft. of CVG fir floors installed. I've talked to my flooring installer at length about the relative pros/cons of the various finishes. The conclusion I've come to is that yes, durability can be equal or better with a water based finish, but depending on the wood, the look may or may not be what you want. The guy doing my floors is a one man operation, hard to get because he is so much in demand for the quality of work that he does. He told me that, at least for the fir that I'm doing, although the durability would probably be the same, I most likely would not be happy with the water based finish, even Bona Traffic. He said that for some woods it's great, but does not bring out the color like Glitza does, at least for the fir. We are going to do the first 2 coats with Glitza acid cure, then the top coat with Glitza's new water based finish. According to him, the new water based finish from Glitza is truly state of the art, the best there is at the moment. So, I'm going to sacrifice & find a place to stay for couple of days (with my two cats) while the initial two coates of Glitza acid cure is applied. We are then going to cover the floor with a felt cloth and masonite, finish the rest of the work on the house, then at the end, do the final finish coat with the new Glitza water based finish. I really want to bring out the best in this flooring. It is old growth, 200+ probably year old Doug fir, sold in a hazardous tree sale by the forest service. It was rough milled and stored for about the last 6 years. The material for my floor was hand picked, then sent the the mill and milled into flooring for my project. My interior doors, entrance door, and all of my base, case and window trim has all been custom milled from the same batch of wood, so I'm really excited to see it come together.

White Oak often requires a sealant....but that depends on the stain manufacturer. Some stains do NOT require a sealant (over white oak) whereas others MUST have sealant. As you can see, this gets weird really quickly. Did you know that Bona makes their own stains? Does your REFINISHER know this? Someone who has been trained on the Bona Systems (there are more than one...just for fun!) they will have ALL of this information already in their head! A two part polyurethane is much higher quality than a single component. Bona has several single components which the refinishers LOVE to use (because it makes them more money and are super easy to use) and Bona makes 2 part (2K) products that are difficult and expensive to use....but produce a far superior finish (as mentioned above). If you are not hearing what you want to hear...then find someone else. You are welcome to use the National Wood Flooring Association's website to find your nearest Certified Sander/Refinisher. Anything less than that and you KNOW they are not fully aware of what they are using and are not fully aware of the work/costs ahead of them. It is a simple way to double check without confrontation.

I think most of the "warmer" tone you get with oil-based poly comes from the absorption of the poly directly into the wood on the first coat; i.e., it has a slight "staining" effect (this is based on my own observations when we do site-finished floors on our projects). Since your wood has already been sealed with water-base poly, putting oil-based poly on top of it (even assuming it would adhere properly) probably wouldn't have much of a "warming" effect. My recommendation would be to add some water-based stain to the water-based poly you're already using and try applying a coat or two of that to get the "warmer" tone you're looking for.

Cannot recommend others, as I have not used them. Anyway, the products I know of that are quality finishes simply are not distributed and sold through consumer channels. You have to approach a flooring materials dealer and then probably take a long car ride to pick the stuff up.

I'm looking for a waterbased satin finish. Which company is better the bona kemi or the street shoe(that's what my floor guy said he likes to use)?

Either are very good. I would go with your floor guys reco if he is doing the work.
