Nearly all of the manufactuers of porcelain floor tile have a plank-look porcelain in their catalog and most are looking pretty good these days. Have you tracked down all of the different distributors in your area to discover which retailers are carrying which lines?

The first ones I ordered were so bad, I gave up the concept. But I stumbled accross one other-- not sure of the brand, just saw the board when stone shopping-- that had a fantastic wood grain texture. They got around the difficulties of color by offering only in near white and very dark brown, with minimal variation.

The tones weren't right for me, and on the sample they were laid with a very wide grout line, so I'm not sure they are rectified, but light years ahead of what was out there a few years ago.

At the risk of being contrary, wood is wood, tile is tile, they are very different materials. My thoughts would be to use each for what they excel at. I don't see how you're going to get an effective wood look and feel out of tile, however there are many beautiful tiles designs out there. You're much more likely to get a nice effect by going with a "stone look" tile, than a "wood look" tile.

Of course, it is your privilege to do whatever the heck you want to your floors (*smile*).

I simply asked if anyone had seen a wood look tile they liked. If there's a good one, I'd like to know about it.

I like the look of wood, but not the maintenence, especially in a country house with dogs. The dozens of laminate products out there would suggest I'm not alone in this.

Too bad they didn't stagger the joints on the sidewalls like they did on the bar.

This particular tile comes in 36 inch lengths. If I like it in person, I may use it as a shower surround!

So I just got back from a tile store and they had some wood tiles that didn't look half bad, but they didn't show the brand name so unfortuately I can't share that with you.
They were not smooth looking like the ones in the pix above, rather they had a chipped, weathered, country look to them and the individual tiles were shaped like the planks of wood (the other ones I had seen had fake seams/planks). Apparently they are popular with folks who have large dogs that scratch wood, or live where mud/water is tracked into the house, or with lots of sunlight that don't want fading/yellowing of their "wood".

My neighbor (who is, of course, a tile guy) recently installed it in his house and it actually looks much better than I thought it would. I am also generally of the mind of it should look like what it is. However, it's great for a beach house and looks really good with their Hawaiian motif. Sorry - I don't know what brand he used, but I would say if that's what you want - keep looking. There are some decent looking ones out there.

Yesterday I stumbled on a Porcelanosa Tile store (or showroom?) and they had really good looking porcelain tiles that looked like wood. I was not really aware of them or interested in them, but after having seen them, I am giving it some thought. The problem is that I was not really thinking of redoing the massive floor...

Just completed exhaustive searching for a porcelian tile flooring for our combined kitchen, living room, dining room & tiny hallway.Living in florida, the conditions are simply (IMHO) NOT best for "real" wood, which was our preference .The Intalgres porcelain planks we found ~blew us away, they are so realistic. My husband is a wood fanatic, so I never thought he'd even consider it....I was quite wrong!
Cannot wait to install this (we're doing it ourselves)over Thanksgiving weekend.It answers many questions...doesnt compete with backsplash, has a lovely soft sheen, like wood does, and when there are a couple largish area rugs down anyway...it'll look fantastic! We've found the perfect solution...for US! :)

I looked at some tiles that came in longer lengths. They really looked good but were very expensive. Also I heard that they generaly are harder to install and need wider grout lines because of crooked tiles. Also more prone to cracking if you don't get 100% support from the mortar, or if there is the slightest movement of the floor. The tiles i used were about 5" x 16". Long enough to look like planks, but short enough to easily replace if one should get damaged. I used a 1/16 grout line.
I used Pamesa Teslin Coral, (since discontinued), with a dark brown grout, tile is just a little lighter than the grout.

Yes, that is the right brand. We're getting the TO6- Roble color. A warmish honey tone. We're getting a "contractor's discount" (which we're not that) but @5.49 per sq. ft. I think it's a deal. They are 6" x 26" planks. Can't wait to install. Love that they're rectified too.

Hey, a friend of mine just had wood look ceramic tile installed in a random wood pattern with 1/8" grout lines. Looks BEAUTIFUL. I just had 600 square feet of the same tile installed by the same company. They installed a "brick wall" pattern not a random "wood" pattern and used 1/4" grout joints. Looks like a huge brick wall! It looks HORRIBLE! The invoice clearly stated "wood pattern" under install. So now I'm fighting with the installation company. Wish me luck! Oh, AND the grout color dried too light. They offered to stain the grout. They have refused to redo the floor. Owner said that tile cannot be laid in a random pattern because the joints would be too close. And says he couldn't do 1/8" grout lines - too small. I even showed him a photo of the floor HIS company installed in my friend's house. He said that was a "no-no" to install it that way. I showed him HIS showroom floor sample of that tile - in a wood pattern. He still refused to redo my floor. Any ideas for the fight would help me! Thanks all! BTW the tile is Gayafores Roble Cuero.

Wow, that's too bad. Check with the supplier, or just look at the back of the tile: I think virtually all the wook look tile is rectified, meaning each one is exactly the same size, and it can be set with a grout line even less than an eighth. [Rectified means its cut to perfect size after it's fired. You can usually tell by looking at the back.]

If the tile is indeed rectified, its time to talk to a lawyer.

Thanks for your reply. They offered me a $600 throw rug and free shoe molding. Haven't accepted either. I thought I would be able to deal with it being stained, but no colors look good, I've tried at least 8 colors. And I'm afraid if they stain it it will look like someone handpainted around 600 sq ft of tile. Us lucky consumers must go through arbitration procedures. I will look at the tile and the box - can't find the supplier anywhere - on the internet. They all look exactly the same size. Wish I could post pictures. I would post the photo of my friends floor - and then my floor. And let you compare. urgh. Thanks again!!

Hi-I used Porcelanosa on my countertops(!) in my beach house.
It looks like weathered wood and is gorgeous. I don't know where you live but in California, it is carried by Yardbirds/Home Depo for a much lower price than in the Porcelanosa showroom. I am about to use another company's
tile for a bathroom remodel in the same beach house. I love it!
