terra cotta color tile --- out of style?

hi trying to find tile similar to this saltillo but salesman told me it had been discontinued and was "out of style!"

i want to use in entry and laundry. photo is of current kitchen in maine but am moving upstate new york.

can anyone recommend similar look? thanks very much..

Shaughnn-- I even took precautions. 1983 We did the lobby of a corporate office building (Echlin Industries, Branford, Ct.-- new construction) and the helpers who grouted, did a terrible job. My father sent me in on a saturday with a buffing machine and a full 30 gallon carbouy of muriatic acid, and told me he didn't care if I had to mix it 1:1-- get it clean. I wrapped and vasalined every metal surface anywhere near where I was working, opened all doors and windows-- took all precautions, and although I didn't have to go as strong as 1:1, I DID have to go to 3:1, and that was strong enough. I can't even imagine how bad the fumes must have been in an enclosed area full strength! Anyway. Monday morning, I'm on another project, and the job super comes and grabs me mid morning to let me know to call the office (back before cell phones, obviously). I called my father and he's going nuts over the phone, telling me I better get down there, that there's a problem. When I got back to the job, literally 150 feet from where I'd been working, a brand new stainless steel water fountain was a nice bright orange. Permanently. $1600.00 out of my paycheck, when, as a union apprentice, I was making just under 500.00 a week.

Is this stuff liquid or solid? Is the grout chalky to the touch? Come off on your finger if you rub it? It could be the cement material in the grout is breaking down. If this was unsealed terra cotta tile it will absorb this powdery residue when it gets wet. The first thing you need to do is find out if the drain system is the cause. If the grout continues to deteriorate, the thinset can't be too far behind. Loose tiles will be next. For the film on the tiles, they sell a product for grout cleanup. You might try that. As I remember it contains a mild acid, follow the directions carefully. Ron

One thing your might consider is a hand made glazed quarry tile. We found some that are hand molded -- the glaze has a kind of texture to it and they have little divots and dimples. They are a good complement to the old wood of our kitchen cabinets. I wanted something that would look appropriate in our old house, but did not want wood and stone would not have seemed correct in our 1927 house. I saw a kitchen with tiles similar to these on a Historical Society house tour and then went in search of something similar. Our tiles are made by Seneca Tile, in Ohio, but there are several companies that offer glazed quarries, both machine and hand made.

Salsibe, try googling Fort Worth Brick and Tile. There are many saltillo places in Texas, and they are very reasonably priced. I want to say 2-3$ a foot. They come glazed, so they are maintenance free, or unglazed, and also in a rustic which in my opinion, is gorgeous. I have a sample of the rustic, I'll try to take a picture and post it. I'm going through exactly what you are...I want terracotta, and that is basically what saltillo is, it's baked earth, clay. My tiles are going to be in half the kitchen as well, along with hardwood. I just looked on their website, 8x8 hexagon is 1.69 a piece, and 12x12 is 2.49. That is sealed. Unsealed is cheaper. think i'm going to try to get this marazzi saltillo. maybe not for bathroom but for entry halls and laundry. it does not show the dirt and more importantly, it's cheerful!"

I'm not a tile expert but I think that's not Saltillo tile.
It looks like a glazed/fired ceramic tile, like this.

i am looking for the porcelain version... made by marazzi i think. but all the stores near where i am renovating say they can''t get it because.....well, you know,.....out of style.

jcfwood gave me the efloors site (chicago). they say they have the tile but would need to ship to ny. sounds awfully $$$.

maybe i need to give up and go with what "everyone" is doing these days!

If that's what you want, you should look into the shipping. It can't be that expensive. Another option would be to contact Marazzi to see if a supplier in you area might have it. Even if it's not popular or stocked locally, they might be able to ship it along with another shipment to your local Marazzi distributor.
