Can I install tile or engineered wood floor over old tile?

My kitchen has two different kinds of tile - due to the fact that I expanded the kitchen and couldn't find the old tile. The old tiled floor is solid and flat, except for some decorative variation in the surface of the tiles. Also, the height of the two different tiles is the same. I don't want to go to the expense of pulling up the old tile, so I am considering installing a new floor, either tile or engineered wood, over the old floor. Can this be done? Are there any considerations I should keep in mind? Does it matter whether the new floor is wood or tile? Also, I want to install the floor after the new cabinets are in and also in the spot for the dishwasher, which I haven't purchased yet , so it can be one with adjustable height legs. Thanks in advance for any advice.
