Shopping for homeowner's insurance

Hi everyone!

I am looking for some feedback on various homeowner's insurance companies--has anyone had a bad experience or have reason to avoid a particular insurer?

I am shopping after 17 years with the same company. They have jacked up my rate this year, claiming the need for much increased replacement cost coverage. So far, every quote that I've received is much less per year, anywhere from $300 to $500 less, all in about the same ballpark for replacement cost (but lower than the current company).

Other than checking the AMBest rating, is there anything else that could help me choose a new insurer?
