Garage door after repair

Hello,

I need your help!

I replaced both springs on my uncle's garage door and now the garage door opener does close completely the door. There's always a small opening at the bottom.

What do you guys thing it is?

I played with the adjustments of the garage door opener and nothing helped.

Did you use the right springs? They come in different weight ratings.

What happens when you disconnect the opener? Does the door function correctly?

Yes I did use the right springs, some rating as the old one.

I did not disconnect the opener.

Lets say it does the same without the opener, it means that the spring tension is not the same on each side?

Installing a garage door isn't especially difficult but is going to require two people because of the physical size of the panels. It is also possible to buy replacement panels, although wooden doors might be more difficult to match. The door should have a tag identifying the manufacturer, who could give you more information. The biggest challenge with garage doors isn't so much the door itself - basically it just bolts together. It's the opening mechanism. Torsion springs (the kind the sit above the door) store a tremendous amount of energy and can be VERY dangerous for the neophyte. The track is pretty simple to assemble too. Most of the large chains sub out the work to local contractors. Quality of workmanship can vary widely. You might be better off to see if you can find any recommendations for local garage door companies if you want to have it professionally installed.

I have changed this part many times. If you are able to make the change, then is likely worth it,(if you are going to pay Sears to do it, then don't do it. You will pay more than it is worth) You can get them reasonable on ebay. It is the top metal gear, and has a large white gear connected on the bottom. I don't recall the part number, as I recycle them from removed units,(I beleive the part number is listed in the post above) It is mechanical surgery, if your okay about that. Remove the door opener power head from the ceiling and put it on a table to do this one. You may want to take a picture of the internals before you start removing things to get at the part to change. My Sears garage door opener was only coming up about 2/3 of the way. So I adjusted the opening (lift) and decreased the closing settings. Now when it open the carriage stops at the right opening position, then when you try to close it it continues to open until it slams into the opening device and jams up. Do I need to adjust the door closing and opening down (less of each), move the door to the closed position and attach the trolly. Then open and let it reset, and adjust from there??? HELP PLEASE> Should I get a repair man in for $125-$200 or is this a simple fix???

If the small opening at the bottom is the same all the way across the door it may just be the 'down limit control.' This is on the side of the motor unit and takes a small screwdriver. Turn the control in the direction of the arrow printed on the cover. If you go too far the door will bump the floor and reverse to the open position. It may take a little tweaking to get it right. Also remember if you run the motor too much the thermal protector will turn it off and you will have to wait about 15 minutes for it to reset.

You should start the diagnosis with the opener disconnected. That allows you to figure out if the problem is with the door or the opener. As Don mentioned you may need to adjust the down limit on the opener. It's reasonable to assume that new springs are a little stronger than the old ones.

It is my uncle's Garage.

Anyways, He told me that he took off the opener, and he cannot close the door manually.

Does that mean that I put the spring tension too high?

It probably does. You need to adjust the springs so when you raise the door to approximately waist high it will stay there.
