Smartstrand Dupont v. Smartstrand

We have a sample of two frieze carpets: Smartstrand by Dupont and Smartstrand. The differences that I can tell are:

Smartstrand Dupont:

Elite warranty (lifetime stain, 7 year texture, etc)

Shorter pile

Smartstrand non-Dupont:

lesser warranty (15 year stain, 5 year texture)

Longer pile

The Smartstrand non-Dupont is more expensive. Does the difference in price just come down to style (pile length) and color? Does a shorter pile wear as well as a longer pile?

there is only one Smartstrand branded by Dupont sold by Mohawk. My understanding both those carpets are both the same fiber. Sometimes you will see cpt with no brand name and the dealer will tell you in unbranded x but in this case Smartstrand is smartstrand.

Think they were referring you to CORTERRA. Mohawk uses DuPont polymer for one type of SmartStrand and Corterra for the other - but you won't see that word, just SmartStrand. The DuPont one will clearly say DuPont Sorona and are heavier and better constructions.

The difference between Smartstrand and DuPont Sorona Smartstrand is the same as getting a generic prescription vs. a name brand prescription. Kind of like choosing between a Toyota and a Lexus. The products often are based on similar characteristics, but one has more features than the other. The Smartstrand branded as DuPont will have more features and benefits, often including more styling, softer feel, etc. than Smartstrand. But typically Smartstrand will cost less than the DuPont branded products.

We too bought Mohawk Silk (Cozy Comfort or something like that) and initially had trouble with our existing vacs (central system and a Shark). We also contacted Mohawk and purchased a Hoover Windtunnel T Series Model UH70205 which was one of the models they recommended. It works like a champ. We bought online for about $125, but I have seen it since then (or very similar versions) in big box stores. Given the amount we paid to put in this carpet, I was getting nervous when I initially read some of the reviews about vacuum problems, but I have also seen some similar to mine where unhappy buyers started out with vac problems (especially Dysons), only to be overjoyed with the product when they got the right vac for the job. One thing it shows is that you don't have to spend a mint to get a great vac for this type of carpet. This Hoover was less than my Shark! But at end of the day, we LOVE our carpet now -- best ever and would recommend it to anyone! One thing -- what did Floortech mean when he said it "caught fire" because of its softness? I assume that is a figurative statement?

Mohawk has 2 SmartStrand lines - one with DuPont Sorona and one without. They buy polymer from DuPont and PTT PolyCanada. The canadian polymer is in the generic SmartStrand. DuPont Sorona is only in those samples you had that are marked with DuPont Sorona. The primary featrues are the same for both - soft, inherently stain resistant, bleach resistant and durable. What you won't find with generic SmartStrand is the renewable resource technolgoy or the breadth of styling choices. In most stores you will find SmartStrand under the Aladdin selling line and the DuPont Sorona versions under Horizon.

Without knowing the specific carpet styles you are looking at, it is possible for one to cost more than the other due to pile height. But, there are many other factors that determine the cost of the product - color is really not one of them.

In general, the Smartstrand with DuPont Sorona polymer has:

- more fashion
- bio story
- longer warranties
- many Sorona styles feature Optibac, Mohawk's better backing.
- many more choices in style/color/price options

We do have two different SmartStrand's...one with Sorona and featuring the BIO story, the extended warranties, but in most cases, heavier - more robust styles...as well as the backings mentioned above by JBranch.

Shorter pile products can certainly wear as well as longer - sometimes even better depending on twist and overall density. If the extra warranties and green story aren't important to you - go with SmartStrand. It's all about options.
