Floor guy said Bona Mega/Traffic too hard....help

So, I had a floor person out this morning to look at 1200 sqft of hardwoods...6 year old red oak, no stain. Has oil based poly on it now.

I asked if he had ever used Bona Mega. He said he had used it , Traffic and StreetShoe, but felt they dry to hard and then crack, chip vs the oil based is more flexible and will give more with the giant dog's that we have. I have never heard this before. I was convinced that Mega was what I would use do the odor and hardness etc.

Is this true that Mega will dry too hard and end up chipping and cracking from dog nails?

actually it is just the opposite. Traffic, StreetShoe and Mega, have stretchable chracteristics. Oil is rather brittle once it cures. That doesn't mean oil is bad, it is oil, it will crack at the joints if the floor shrinks, and gaps a little, waterbased will stretch, sometimes causing white lines, because it is stretching.

Just a comment on the "white lines" that appear when the floor shrinks, those white lines eventually give way becoming the points from which the finish peels off the floor.

Whether the problem with the finish on my floors (over 2500 sq ft) is a poor product, a substitute product (Bona contends that Traffic would never peel if properly applied so whatever was used on my floor must not have been Traffic), or poor application (not enough dry time, failure to lightly sand between coats), the result is finish that peels.

When I can afford it, I will have the Bona Traffic (or whatever it is) removed. At that point I will finish the floors with tung oil which is what I wanted in the first place. The floor guy (recommended by the mill which reclaimed and remilled the heart pine flooring) praised the durability of Traffic. I should have realized that putting down a product like Traffic is less labor-intense than applying tung oil. My mistake.

If you paid for Traffic, then the contractor owes you the difference in product cost. Yes, a coat of Traffic can be applied over Mega. However, Mega or any other existing coat needs to be be properly prepared to be successful. Just so you know...there is Traffic and then Traffic HD...and yes Traffic HD costs more than Traffic. I just returned from a job I did with Traffic that is eight years in service in an active house; floors, steps and trim. Except for the usual damage from denting, the floors look fabulous. Some will tell you that Traffic is overkill...well that overkill looks awfully good after eight years. Most of the contractor complaints regarding Bona products resides in the higher product costs and recent Bona marketing practices in the U.S.

You should be fine, your floors may actually be stronger for it...you'll have a good underlayment and the top finish will be what you requested...4 coats is a good floor covering. Just make sure that the floors are being buffed before each additional application...it should look fine! Show us pictures when they're done! Tara

Sorry for my delayed return/response. Because of the diagonal layout, I started applying the sealer and poly in one corner with the short piece, and worked my way out, brushing along the lengths of the boards, getting wider and wider. So the duller portion was roughly in the middle of the process. The duller area is a rectangle, roughly equivalent to the bumpout space. I remember when sanding it the wood seemed different than the rest (though not literally so, as it's extensions of the planks). I agree that I don't know that the new room vs. patch in old room are dull for the same reasons. I just mentioned it because when I described the finish in the room addition I remembered the dull patch in the dining room.

H! @G & S Floor Service. Your recommendation 6 months ago was to use HD traffic finish on my floors. However, my floor guy did only the 2 coats of MEGA clear and I am starting to see faint scratches (probably from my kids' toys). Would it be OK if now we decide to add the HD traffic over the floors and if so what is the procedure to be followed? Can we just add traffic on top or do we need to prepare the floor in any certain way? Also, if there are a few scratches or cracks can they be fixed at the time of adding HD traffic? Also, there are quite a lot of gaps in the floors (assuming floors have shrunk because of cold winter) will the traffic just drip into the cracks when applied, is that normal? thank you so much in advance for your help.
