Christmas Shopping W/O Plastic?

Ok guys, how many of you did your Christmas shopping without using your credit card? How many will NOT receive a shock when the bill comes in January?

I don't receive a shock, I know what I can spend so don't go over it. I didn't use any credit cards except Sears when I was younger and I kept a small balance. I had a friend who got into financial trouble so I was very careful. Strange as it sounds I wanted to be financially secure even when I was 20 years old. I guess that was based on being poor as a child.

Not me!
No way!
I used my credit card as much as I could... and I will continue to use it in the next weeks. The perks are too good to pass up!

ME!
My statement is never a shock. I have a budget and I stick to it, each and every month.
Christmas is even easier than usual. I have a Christmas Club and get a check each October. I hold that check until the December CC bill comes in with all the extra CC charges on it, deposit it, and pay in full.
I pay in full every month... Christmastime is no different.

Hi arum, I don't post on the cactus forum very often, but I have quite a few Schlums and other jungle cactus. I'll tell you what I do to keep them from drying out. I have found that most of the soil that Schlums come in compact and get stiff when dry, so I make sure to keep them moist. I don't water from above because this can cause the plant to mold, have black rot, mush, or have dieback. When I buy a new plant I take the plant immediately out of the plastic liner, this has been the death of many schlums. Water it really well, (to remove the crust on top of the soil and remove fertilizer from the soil) then put it in a catch pot 1-2 sizes larger than the pot size. How I do this is put about an inch of gravel on the bottom of the catch then put the pot in and adjust the gravel level until the plant is level with the top of the catch pot. I then measure water to the level of the gravel replace the pot and then fill in the gap around the pot with more gravel all the way to the top, this anchors the pot and helps keep it from tipping, I also put gravel on the soil of the plant. When it begins to droop or the soil begins to lift from the side of the inside pot I know to water it again with the same amount as before. Water the gravel, not the plant itself. This works like hydroponics, in a way. You can also mark a stick and insert it into the gravel to guage the water level. Never let the water reach above the pot's bottom. I have also planted Schlums in the clay AV self watering pots, the same size as the pot they came in. Schlums like tight toes. Just remember that in the US it is not as humid as where they are from that a complete dry out can cause them to shrivel up. They like to be moist, but not soppy or drippy. Mine love light and as long as they are not moved and kept moist (not soppy) and on the cool side, (below 75*) minimal bud drop occurs. As soon as you see new growth you can start to feed your plant 1/4 strength liquid tomato like fertilizer, I've been feeding mine for about a week now. and they have been growing like weeds. I have one that evey stem has new growth. Another thing I'd recommend is when you go out to buy a plant in any cold weather at all, keep a styrofoam cooler in the back seet and immediately transfer your plant to that before leaving the nursery. I also have one handy for aquarium fish. This helps reduce the shock of warm, cold, warm, cold, etc..

I hope to see a few cherries here on a small tree I planted last year. Its the sour cherry, montmorency type. Almost didn't come out of dormency until mid July, when it finally started to branch out and get more leaves. My dad was partial to bing cherries and right now, they do sell them, but they come from Chili. He decided to stew some in booze. He filled a jar with the bings and poured in some VO whiskey. They are still in my fridge and have remained there for well over 20 years now. No signs of any spoilage, and I would expect them to be quite mellow by now. Bings are nice for fresh eating, but not as well suited for canning or pie making, because they don't hold up as well as sour types.

Ha!! ... I can back you up on that Keeks (very addicting)..but fun!! Been a CTS member since 1976..when I was just a young thing. We went to Cape Cod when I first discovered them.. We would go there for vacation every year. As I told kathleen, I would go from one to the other all over the Cape. They usually have pretty much all the same stock..but every so often I would find something different that one of the others didn't have. I got friends addicted, when they would come up to visit at the Cape.. I remember when RI opend their first out of the Cape..A friend called me to say she was in a Hotel and it was right across the street from her!! Then they Moved to Manchester, CT. We lived in NY and would drive 2 1/2 hrs from NY to go..As time went on...more and more. Now BB&BY have bought them out, and they are really popping up. So now kathleen and I have another 'Partner In Crime' to swap stories...Sorry Ladies..but I'm sure they will be coming soon near you..be patient... Also, as kathleen said they are NOT as good as they used to be since new ownership..but still worth going.. jane

My gritty mix is 50% this stuff - granitos. I buy it at a builder´s merchants - €2 gets a bag I can barely lift. They use it here as a sort of pebble dashing. And I like my pots heavy - they live outdoors al year round - if I used perlite in plastic pots they would fly around whenever the wind blew.

I do majority of shopping online so a ccard is necessary.

The statements are never a surprise. All purchases are entered into MS Money so I know the balances at all times, statements not required. Every statement balance is paid in-full.

I put myself on a strict budget this year and will spend about 35% of what I usually do. With that said it is still a bit more than I budgeted for. My DH has lost most of his income so we are learning to live on just mine. It is quite an adjustment.I am cutting corners everywhere and still need to cut down some more to reduce our mortgage or car debt.

A few months ago I could walk into any store and buy whatever I wanted. I didn't buy that much, but I spent alot on my family. I paid of a lot of medical bills for them, or gave rent money or paid car payments. Now that I know I can't just buy whatever I want it feels kind of scary. It also motivates me to save more, and spend less.

I never, ever, ever used plastic, or felt I had to. There are differences in families, I hear.

My family always gave modest Christmas presents. Late husband's family was even more thrifty. The phrase I'm thinking of may be "tokens." When I overheard Late H discussing gifts with an acquaintance, the acquaintance clearly thought such small gifts were inappropriate. I didn't really care, so long as the things were thoughtful or useful.

My family drew names for some years and now does a Yankee Swap. In fact, I don't care for buying/exchanging useless tchotchkes, i'd rather draw names and spend a little more for something that an individual would really want. Any thoughts on how to tactfully word that would be appreciated.
