Beech hardwood floors? vs maple vs oak

Hi-

Anyone have any opinions on Beech hardwood floors? Looking into putting hardwood floors into my 1 bedroom condo and I like the lightness of the Beech wood but am leary since all i've been hearing about is maple and oak as ones to go with. thanks in advance!

I would recommend laminate. One of the great advantages that laminate flooring has over other types of flooring is how easy it is to keep clean. Once installed, the after care that laminate flooring requires is very little and extremely simple, and if it is carried out regularly, your floor can be kept looking like new for many years to come.
Generally speaking a simply brush over with a soft headed brush or a very slightly damp mop, is all that is needed when cleaning laminate flooring. Follow this with the use of a vacuum cleaner around the edges of the room, and also around any larger pieces of furniture that cannot be moved, and that is all that is generally required.

If you want temporary flooring, plastic laminate would be a good choice.

Know that any engineered wood flooring, regardless of brand, will be susceptible to denting damage. Oak will hide denting better than the finer-grained species. However, I just examined an oak floor from a major manufacturer that suffered severe dents even before the owners moved in.

I have some input to add myself. My uncle was the purchasing manager for Shaw Wood floors for quite some time until he left recently, and put me in touch with one of the manufacturers of engineered wood flooring that Shaw had purchased from, who is also local to me (SoCal). I went there today and spoke with the owner's son who was very helpful. Based on his knowledge on wood floors in general, and of his competitors, I am inclined to listen to him. Max Windsor: a relatively new player in the game, started by a Chinese agriculture business mogul, and has had many claims since its inception due to their relatively new footprint in the marketplace (although they do employ some industry vets). Good idea to stay away as they are still in the development stage. I was being pushed by many of the local flooring stores into this brand, and even got some scary low prices, which I think confirm their inability to compete at this time with other manufacturers. Elegance: Awful quality wood is used in the engineered core. Urban Floor: Relatively new to the game, but good quality engineered core, which is probably the most important thing in engineered wood flooring. Their product is actually pretty good for the price point. Garrison: nothing very special, middle men who charge more for products available for a lesser price elsewhere. Due to this factor, he suggested I look elsewhere. The product they manufactured themselves was from a 11 ply birch core, and they even manufactured the birch which they used in the core, and use a proven German adhesive to hold the plys together, and all plys are of the same density. The glue is very resistant to water and holds together extremely well based on us submerging a piece of their flooring into a tub of water. I am going back there over the weekend, but thought I would share the highlights from today's conversation about the few companies I had questions about.

espresso, I haven't had any tile installation quotes, but I'm going to go out on a limb here, and say forget the guy who quoted you $30 sq ft. Get at least two other quotes. As far as cleaning Hardwood goes, I can't imagine anything that's much easier to clean. I have Tigerwood throughout most of my upstairs, and it only requires wiping/dusting with a microfibre mop. Occasionally I'll wet that same mop and wash the floors. Mine have a factory applied aluminum oxide finish that is so EASY to wipe clean. My old vinyl floors were a pain...do the new ones still have all those friggen cracks that dirt settles into? And, I get more compliments on the flooring that on all the renos/new furniture we have added over the past two years- it's my pride and joy and I don't regret for one second having put in in.

When it comes to hardwood, trends are something to ignore! Why? Because hardwood is pretty much a lifetime purchase, and unless yours is damaged in some way, you're probably not going to replace it. So, light wood vs. dark wood, wide planks vs. narrow planks -- that stuff's all going to come and go. With that in mind -- as well as the very real concerns about cleaning dark wood -- I'll vote for a nice, neutral midtone every time. Not too much contrast, not too red, and (unless it's a beach house) not too pale. I think this is the wood that's most likely to give you good service and stand the test of time.

Wood vs. Engineered Wood? No contest in this case. If the home was built in 1905, put real hardwood in. This preserves the integrity of the home's building materials. Plus, as you can see from the age of these floors, higher grades (i.e. thicker) hardwood can be sanded several times; you usually don't get even one chance to sand engineered wood. The hardwood layer at the top of this multilayered product is simply too thin. Level Floors and Subfloors There are ways to level a subfloor, ranging from replacing parts of the subfloor with thicker or thinner sheets of plywood (or planks, see below), to pour-on leveling compounds that harden to make the entire floor level. What you use to level uneven areas depends on what the subflooring is. If it is plywood or concrete, the compound works. But more likely with this home, on floors at or above grade, there will be wood planks laid at a diagonal across the floor joists. So in your home, the layers were probably joists first, then subfloor planks of wood, then hardwood with tongue & groove joints. You cannot effectively use a pour-on leveling compound on a plank subfloor, as there are cracks between the planks. However, you can lay a new hardwood floor directly on a wood plank subfloor as long as those planks are sound and relatively level. Replace individual planks that have been damaged by water or insects, are otherwise compromised, or even missing (it happens!), with either new planks of lumber, or with plywood of the same thickness as the planks. Any lumber you install, for either the subfloor or finished flooring, should be brought in to your home several days prior to installation, so the materials acclimatize to your typical interior temperature and humidity. Unlike for ceramic or porcelain tile, the subfloor does not have to be perfectly level. And unlike vinyl sheeting, planks or tiles, the hardwood won't "telegraph" minor differences in height, and minor surface irregularities, so the subfloor doesn't have to be absolutely perfect; it should be sound, strong, uniform and essentially level. Your flooring contractor can give you specifics on what upgrades your subfloor may need once the original hardwood is removed. Joists If the floor is significantly not level in parts, or if certain areas feel spongy when you walk on them, I recommend you have your flooring contractor, a home inspector, or structural engineer inspect the subflooring and especially the floor joists. You don't want to invest in a new floor, only to have it become damaged because some joists weren't attended to. Transitions Transitions (a.k.a. thresholds or molding) between existing rooms and the new floor ought to be made of the same wood and same finish (stain, polyurethane, etc.) as the new flooring you are putting down. As wood ages, the finish becomes darker, so trying to make the transitions match the finishes of existing floors is very difficult and not recommended (what will match those floors right now won't match later after your transitions age up a bit). Eventually, the transitions wouldn't match either the new or the old floors! Transitions come in four types: reducer (when the two floors being joined are of different heights), seam binder (when the floors are the same height, and the boards from each are very close to one another), T-mold (when the two floors are the same height, but there is a crack between the two rooms' flooring) and stair nose or stair edger (when the flooring needs to curve around the front of a stair's "tread"--the flat part of a stair upon which you tread!). The transitions for your particular project can be ordered when you order the hardwood, so make sure to include measurements for those doorways/entrances. The contractor can tell you if he/she anticipates there will be a height difference or gap between the floorings, which would require those particular transitions. Dry Air Concerns Consult a local lumber supplier or flooring contractor familiar with your local climate conditions to discuss finishes or other tips for keeping your wood floors healthy in the dry winters. American beech is fine for a hardwood floor. It is about the same density as red oak and it has only moderately noticeable grain. Less grain does mean that dings and dents will be more noticeable. It is slightly less dimensionally stable than oak or maple, but that should not be a problem unless you go over 3 inches wide and/or have wildly fluctuating humidity levels in your home. Color wise, American beech does have some variation between heartwood and sapwood.

European beech is a very uniform wood with very little color variation and generally finer grain due to slower growing conditions in northern Europe versus the USA. It tends to produce higher grades of wood than American beech, although you can get American beech in clear grades too.

If you want American beech in greater than 3" widths, then I would suggest rift and quartersawn material which is more dimensionally stable and also has a linear grain pattern and very pretty ray fleck in the 90 degree quartersawn portion.

any opinions on oak vs. maple? likewise vs. beech?

It's all a personal preference as far as the look or style you desire. The factors that play a roll include size or sizes of floor boards, color of wood/finish, grade of wood, grain pattern of wood, and site finished versus prefinished installation.

Be aware that the higher grades (clear,select) will tend to be more uniform in appearance, whereas the lower grades (#1 Common, #2 common) will have more variation in color and/or visual defects like mineral streaks or knots.

Lots or grain and/or a low sheen finish will visually hide dings and dents that can occur. The most visible grain will be with R&Q oak or ash or hickory and it will be in a linear pattern. Moderately visible grain will be found in beech or birch. The least visible grain pattern will be found in maple.

A cathedral grain pattern is found with plain sawn lumber/flooring and is most noticeable with oak, ash, hickory, or other coarse grain hardwoods. This style seems to be currently out of fashion.

Maple is also a good wood for flooring and it is used on gym floors throughout the country. With a durable, low sheen finish and some care, I think it could remain attractive for a long time before needing a refinish.

We have mixed width, wide plank, R&Q red oak, #1 common, and site finished in our upstairs. It works well with our family and 30# dog. It has held up well for 3.5 years and is very stable and the dings and dents don't show. I won't say we abuse this floor, but it has seen dirty shoes and dog/cat claws and kids riding toys and yet it still looks good. My son's Plasma car has scratched the surface finish here and there (Waterlox), but this type of finish is considered soft and can be touched up down the road. I'm not sure how well the harder finishes would hold up against a 5 year old and his car.

Finally, the great thing is that almost all hardwood floor finishes can be redone to look like new again. When the surface finish of sheet vinyl or laminate gets scratched and dull, the product gets tossed in the landfill.
