Karastan Carpet/Installation Quote Cost

I was quoted from a local carpet dealer $2,300 for a Karastan Berber for a 346 sq. ft. room - this includes the carpet, a Martinique 21 lb. pad (is this a good quality?), and all the labor (removing and disposing old carpet, installing new).

Is this reasonable?

get a few uotes from local dealers.

this will give you an accurate representation of average costs for your geographic location.

Wow that's really high. Your looking at close to 60 bucks a yard. Don't get to hung up on the Karastan name. Quality has gone down hill since Mohawk does their production now.
Also don't get any kind of smartstrand or sorna fiber. Try to get a nylon, and by far StainMaster makes the best nylon. A lower weight StainMaster like a 32 oz. will preform and resist stains just was well as a 60 oz. StainMaster.

Thank you both. I believe it is Porcelona brand (sp) which I know is pricy. I did see this tile in place in another unit and it was beautiful, with very tight grout lines. The difference between this install and their "entry level" tile, 24x24 Atlas Blanco is 10k. This also looks beautiful. I just need to decide if I should pay the extra up front and be done!

you will find a better price from a carpet dealer who will also do the installation. I have a similar situation, 2 square landings and 3 groups of steps and a hall. I had it redone aout 12 to 14 years ago and the whole deal was under $1000...and a very high quality carpet. But wondering why you want tread showing on each side of each step? maybe that is upping your costs? And you are simply opening yourself to every day dusting. Somehow the dust on stairs shows up really well. I remember my mother running the dust mop on the stairs every day...so when It came time for me to carpet stairs, I didn't leave any wood showing.

We did! This is the Destiny color. The photos don’t do it justice, but we are very pleased with the look and feel. Most people assume it’s a large area rug until they see it’s carpet (which is what I was going for). It hides our kid zone messes well and is very soft for us all to roll around on. Our house is quite modern and I was afraid the pattern would feel too traditional, but it is so subtle that it would go in many styles of home, imo. The installer said it was very difficult to put in since it is woven with very little stretch. It took him all day for one room. He and I have noticed a few of the things that people with Smartstrand complain about. Random fibers will lose their twist and pull up, so I give haircuts. Some areas feel like they are getting a bit fuzzy, even though I bought a CRI approved vacuum. The marks left by said vacuum are very apparent, but the variation of color in the carpet helps hide that and footprints. None of this is enough to make me dissatisfied. I’ve had one incident with a few small drops of pasta sauce, and it did come out with water! All in all, I don’t think we could have picked a better carpet for our particular needs.

Masland is a good company, but the rugs rum the gamut from, $5.00 to $14.00. It is impossible for anyone comment on what you are being charged without more information How much is the carpet per sq foot? How much is the padding? How much is the install per sq ft? Add the sq ft prices of carpet, pad and install and multiply by 1422. Then get quotes from other carpet companies and compare. I do business with a tile and carpet company and they always discount any Masland product by 20%. Now, that is for the rug only. Pad and install are not discounted. Labor to move the furniture should be a separate quote. I am not familiar with healtheir choice padding, so I looked it up. It talks about the memory foam and NOT about being waterproof. You should check on that factor, because when something spills on your rug and it seeps into the padding, no amount of cleaning will KEEP that stain from reappearing. Look into Smart Step, by Mohawk, instead. Using it adds 20 years more to the warranty which comes with a rug. I'm not sure where you get your information but I wasn't aware there was a drop in quality. Where do you get your information? Sonora and Smatstrand are very good fibers. As far as nylon goes Stainmaster is simply a brand name of fiber. You'd be hardpressed to find a difference between it and other nylons.

agreed ... besides, karastan and matinique cushion are top of the line products and with that comes top of the line pricing (and dont forget installation, tear out, and removal is included, so that yardage price isnt as high as it would seem at first glance).

I would also like to know how he got his information that quality has deteriorated.

Karastan use to have a great reputation. It actually still does. But from an end user, an installer, and now higher up in the food chain of the flooring industry, I have seen the quality come down, to the level of Mohawk. Not that Mohawk is bad by all means. But it is lower than what Karastan use to be.

You are paying for the name when you buy Karastan now. A lot of the times you can find the same exact carpet in the Mohawk line, but without the name price of the Karstan carpet.

And the reason I advise against the Sorona/Smartstrand is because it is a polyester. It is still from the PET family. Yes it is PTT, now but all they did was change one single molecule in the formula from the traditional PET polyester. And PET (Polyethylene terephthalate) which in the flooring industry has a rep of being called PET Packs Every Time. Any poly, including the Smartstrand resist some stains very well. Except any kind of oil base stain, which is going to be the majority of all your stains. But the big con of the PET/PTT carpets is that they will matt and pack down. They look great down at first, but they will be flat as a pancake eventually. Poly carpets are notorious for doing that.

And Stainmaster is not just a brand name of nylon. It is the name in nylon. Their type 6.6 nylon is head and shoulders above other fibers.

Yes the Smartstrand has a longer warranty on some stuff, but if you read the fine print it is a pro-rated warranty. Plus Their stain protection warranty doesn't cover any oil based stains, due to he fact it soaks up oil like a sponge.

And I still think it's a high price. The Martinique pad is nice, but whats your reason for looking at it?
