Help with layout of built-in shelves around fireplace
Comments (10)Thanks for your feedback. Hadn't thought of glass doors. That would look great, except we have furniture close enough that the doors wouldn't quite open fully, which may be ok, but we also plan on placing books we are currentlyer ading along with a nice basket for daily used toys. I think that would be a great consideration down the road though, and something we could add later. I will not make them the depth of the fireplace, and can't anyway due to windows/trim. They'll be about 13" I think, which is an inch back from the little stub wall on the right. For the top trim on the side bookshelves I was basically going to copy the fireplace trim but with just the two pieces visible, not three. justgotabme that's exactly what I'm thinking of, and good to confirm that it would still look appropriate even though I don't have windows above the bookshelves. What height do the bookshelves go up to for the best look/proportions? You can see the fireplace is basically a three-piece trim. We can do same height as the existing mantle, or just below that mantle shelf (below the top two pieces of trim), or below all three mantle trim pieces....See MoreNeed help with crown molding in living room with a corner fireplace.
Comments (2)OK; you can't nail into brick, and you don't know if you can nail into the ceiling, but you can install a nailing strip behind the crown molding with masonry anchors and construction adhesive so the crown can follow the brick. Comments (21)I agree with the above, this is a wrap-around casing and all you need is 2 pieces to make it right. The tile guy screwed this up by cutting to high. All he had to do is use a scrap of tile, scribe it and cut a straight line like an example, especially today not many use saws anymore to make this cuts everyone has a multi-tool and to make this cuts is a breeze. Ask your trim guy to replace it, not a big deal and it will take 10 min to make it right. That being said, this is a fireplace and I assume this is a focal point in that room, I doubt you want to use Bondo or some other filler to patch the void, it will not look good....See MoreHelp-what to do with this brick trim around front door ?
Comments (10)Because the brick around the door is sheltered by the overhang you could probably paint it without having to worry about damaging its ability to breathe. However, there is an alternative way to change the color of brick and mortar. I've been fascinated by DYEBRICK since I first discovered the company. The non-toxic, water-based stain soaks in so the texture of the brick is retained. In addition to traditional brick colors they offer LimeLike that can significantly whiten even dark brick. Final color is determined by dilution rate with the fixative. HERE is a photo of one job. The only problem is that people from the U.S. and Canada have to order the product from England....See Moredownforjazz
