Hate T-mold, do I have to have it (slab, glued engineered to tile

I am on a slab, and after a lot of thinking, chose to stick with tile for my kitchen. I want one to flow nicely into the other. There is about a 5-6 foot open transition where the hardwood will meet the tile, and I HATE T-mold.

The engineered wood is 3/8, and so is the 18x18" porcelain tile. I realize the mortar will raise the height of the tile, but I don't know how much. (I think I'm going with a diagonal pattern, if that matters)

The installers will be gluing down the engineered hardwood, and I want to know what my options are for a smooth (turn board?) transition between the tile and the wood. (The wood will run perpendicular to this transition.)

I thought I read something about being able to feather the slab in order to raise the hardwood enough to meet the tile seamlessly.

I am spending quite a bit of money here, and I feel like the t-molding just cheapens the look.

HELP!
