Would also love to see picture, or at least description, but yes, I think probably if you put some neutral solid no-nonsense fabric on it, it could blend in, depending on what the other furniture is of course and how contemporary.

With all the things I've been reading on gardenweb about most new furniture being made in China, of crummy quality, and my own recent experiences trying to find decent new furniture -- I believe we should hang on to our quality-built old furniture and use it if at all possible.

Yes, you can jazz it up w/ fabric. You could go really trendy with a pattern that is really of the moment. You could do something unexpected in terms of color & just make it pop in the room that way, or, you could do just pure white fabric in a matte finish which paired up w/ other more contemporary pieces & art would look clean, crisp & current. I love the juxtaposition of a traditional piece/current fabric. It is very interesting, personal, & creative.

Stinky Gardener is right. In Architectural Digest, I saw an antique camel-back couch with a lot of wood detailing, re-upholstered in a solid white small-square quilted-looking fabric. If the wood parts of your couch are stained a dark wood finish, the white looks even better. Add some pillows made from old oriental rugs for a formal touch or from old silk brightly colored scarves for a more modern look.
