Carpet remnants

Do people still use these? Moving will have hardwood in great room which we did not think we were going to do, So until I can save up for a good rug I was going to get a carpet remnant to warm it up in there .

By the time you get that remnant bound so it won't ravel and shed, you could have bought a good rug.

Really the rugs I saw are like 2 and 3 k that I like? Do you have a source for rugs that look good that are less?

laurastheme......If you are wanting to eliminate so much bending,how about using large planters ? You could use any color if you cover with a very thick bed of straw after positioning them where you'd like.I mentioned above about using carpet and the lots of mulch in one flower bed.The mulch is proably about a foot and a half atm,but I'll have to add more as it settles and decomposes.We put down the carpet,filled in w mulch then I planted daylilies in the mulch along w soil.I will proably add potted plants in the spring and hide the black pots in the straw.No one but myself knows about the pots.Easier to weed and take care of. I love plants and flowers,but am looking for more that require little maintenance.My health isn't great atm,and I don't know how I'll be over the next year.I don't want to stop gardening,but need to get more creative in ways to make it easier.

Samat40: Here are some photos of our basement. These were taken when we weren't quite finished. The wet bar wasn't in. Our basement is completely done now but can't get you the finished photos. I lost my digital for a couple of weeks now and for the life of me can't find it. As soon as I find my camera or buy a new one, I will get updated photos. I have my photos downloaded on snapfish site. The first pic is the brick wall at the bottom of the stairs. That is the first thing you see when you go down the basement. The second pic is how we bricked the metal poles with leftover brick. The tiled area is where the wet bar is and the rest of the basement is carpet. Third pic is where we put all out stereo components. It was a section of the basement where the water trap/pipes (I think that is what it's called)is located. They are on the floor so my husband had to build the wall on an angle to go around them. So that left us with a little cubby section to put the components in. We painted the back of the wall black and use the darkest glass in the door that we can get and still be able to use the remote controls through it. We built the wood edge shelving so they look like they are floating. There is a light inside also. The fourth pic is how we divided the rooms with an arched doorway for the pool table room. We were going to put in french doors but decided not to. My husband thought it wouldn't be good if a pool ball went through the glass if someone accidentally over shot a ball. The fifth pic is the pool table room. My husband doesn't like the low ceiling. He was disappointed that we didn't go with the 10 foot ceilings. Next time we build we are going with the higher ceilings. The sixth pic is our fireplace. We had to put it in for a source of heat. It's a gas one but does the job. This the most cost efficient way to go for us. Since we have a two story house we would of had to put in another furnace to heat the basement and cut in all the duct work for vents (there was only one vent for heat, which is located above the furnace). We also have a bonus room upstairs and if we only use one furnace trying to heat the basement would of made the upstairs bonus room seem very cold. The fireplace heats up the whole basement. The seventh pic is a cabinet my husband built to cover our sub pump. The eighth pic is the stair rails we put in. The ninth pic is a door and face frame to cover our electrical box. The tenth pic is a door to my storage room and bathroom. When we built our house we had the builder put the furnace, water heater, central vac and water softener all in one area so we could frame it in a room together. The furnace room (as we call it) also has some storage space inside. We put up shelving in both the furnace room and storage room. I chose a fairly inexpensive carpet (not a remnant) to go over the cork floor in my basement family room and had it edged. I think it was something like 1.25 a linear ft to have it edged. I didn't want a big investment because this room gets a lot of wear and tear frm kids. I would think any carpet place can get a rug edged for you. And don't limit yourself to remnants.

Not true where I am. Maybe because we are looking for a large (10' x 14') area rug. Plus, I can get one made from SmartStrand.

I am looking also for a big area 10 x 14 or so ,the rugs I like and have seen are up there in prices. This would give me time if I got the remnant to look for one I like on sale or a better buy .

So, when you say you can get it made do you mean they will put a binding on it so it doesn't unravel at the edges? If so, and it is affordable then do that for now. Your other option which is not as pretty is to buy the tape for the edges which prevents unraveling.

Not sure where you are located but if you have "The Dump" store near you then check out what they have. We found a 12 x 10 ft area rug that should have been really expensive, I got it on clearance pricing at the dump for $199.

They have a huge selection of rugs at their NJ locations but, and this is a big but, you really need 2 people because the rugs that are piled are heavy to go through. Some rugs are hung up and you can flip through them but others are piled flat. Ours was one of the only ones that cheap that was hung up, of course I made my husband help me go through the pile first.

Make sure you buy a good quality pad so the hardwood under the rug doesn't wear.

Also check the big box stores, they have area rugs and remnants on clearance somewhat regularly for really good prices. I put a nice berber with a thick pad in our twin toddlers bedroom just in case they climbed/fell out of their cribs. I paid less than $80 for the berber. I actually spent alot more on the pad for it.

Yes you get them bound we did this all the time when hubby was in military and we lived in base housing. Some housing had ugly school like tile and a few actually had hardwood . We always had rugs we had made and a few we carried from place to place as we sure would not going to wall to wall base housing. So yes they would be bound so it would be bound on edges so as not to ravel.

Here, seam binding with a bias tape is $5 a foot from one shop only and remnants aren't really that much cheaper than just roll goods. You can get it serge bound for $2-3 a foot, but that won't last and not that many people offer that either. By the time you pay $200 for the binding and another $200 for the carpet, you could have bought a rug that would be more "decor" like. Home Decorator's Outlet and Overstock have rugs as affordable as remnants.

Binding here is $2 a linear foot from more than one carpet dealer. I can get SmartStrand remnants for under $2 a sq foot. A "decor" like rug is not going to come in a 10' x 14' size and won't clean as well as the SmartStrand. And if I get a SmartStrand in a fleck, it will be plenty "decor" like for me.
