Benchmark or Ekornes Stressless recliner?

I've read through the recliner postings but no one has posted about Benchmark recliners. These are very similar in look to Ekornes Stressless recliner. Although the latter is crazy comfortable, the Benchmark Ventura style is not bad either. It is also on sale now for around $550, verses $995 sale in July-Sept for the Ekornes Stressless Consul recliner. Boring as it may be, money is an object here. I'd have to get the Stressless in a hunter green type color to get the sale price, so I'd do it. The E. Stressless has better head support, but I may have to settle. I just don't want to spend $550 on utter junk, but I'd be willing to save $400 if people have had good experiences with the brand. I have never bought a recliner before.

Does anyone have any experience/knowledge of the Benchmark recliners?

Anyone care to rave about their E. Stressless? The saleswoman sure did!

Love, love, LOVE our Stressless recliners. Have had them for 2 years now and they have just been fabulous. We also bought the Manhattan sofa (we originally bought a different brand of sofa but had to return it and bought the Manhattan instead). All pieces have been worth the $$$ - we paid considerably more than $995 for our chairs (they were $2400 CDN each, and the sofa was $3200 CDN) but we feel worth it as they are the most comfortable recliners we found on our quest for new livingroom furniture. Our chairs are the Eagle style.

CitySlicker is correct about the manufacturer setting minimum prices. We recently purchased two sofas and a recliner and tried to find the best deal. We found a wide range of prices among stores for the same pieces in the same leather. Ekornes has a small book with product numbers and prices which stores use for writing up orders. The furniture store we purchased from let us look at it - it isn't top secret or anything. You simply look at the manufacturer's minimum price and then shop around for the closest price. We were able to buy our furniture for the minimum price. It looks like you live in Ft. Lauderdale - I'm guessing that's your zip code? I live in PA, but have a condo in Florida and did some searching in Clearwater while I was visiting just to compare prices. There is a store called Leather Express, and earlier this year they opened a new building to hold just Ekornes furniture. It was a beautiful showroom, and their prices were about as low as you can get. We actually considered purchasing from them, but our store at home had the same prices, so we decided to do it locally. One other thing, I don't know how often Ekornes has sales, but we ordered our stuff during a sale in November/early December and received over $1000 in free merchandise - a matching leather ottoman, side table, and swing table for the recliner. Wow Beverly27 that is a decent looking and very reasonably priced one. We used to have a recliner that really was the most comfortable chair you could imagine-but it did break down after heavy use. We bought another one that was 'supposed' to be the same but it was never too comfy. So it is now in my bedroom. I would love to get a decent looking one for the family room for my DH(who is also a big guy.6'2' and more than 250 lbs:)- I hope they have this at Brookstone locally so he can test it out. The other thing I am considering that might work for Beachpath-is a chair with ottoman. IKEA has poang chair. I really don't like the looks of it but I was shocked when my DH sat in it and said it was super comfortable. (and so cheap) but something like that might work. I have a very traditional style (maybe a touch transitional but definitely not contemporary...) The stressless chairs with ottoman could work- well the copies of them I mean because the trademarked ones are way pricey. We looked at the Lazy Boy recliners - the looks of some would work for us, but they weren't very comfortable for us. We got Ekornes Stressless sofas. They recline and are very comfortable. They don't have an integrated foot rest, there are separate ottomans to use with them. We got the theater seating grouping because we like having at least one arm rest per seat, but you can get them in a normal couch configuration. Ours are large (wider seat) but they also have a medium size if you need more compact. In depth (front to back) they are pretty compact because they use a metal frame which allows for a thin back. There is a high back if you prefer that. We got the low back because it makes the room feel molre open and it's high enough for us and we got a couple of their recliners for when we want a higher back. They are pretty expensive but I expect them to be a very long term purchase.

You should look for a store near you that carries Ekornes/Stressless. I admit the styles are not to everyone's taste, but they are SOOO comfortable and very high quality. But probably also probably twice or three times as much as the Lane. Here is a link that might be useful: stressless

Thank you for your kind post sharing how much you love your recliners. Thanks too for the pix. Your room looks wonderful!

Last week I returned to the two stores selling the recliners, this time testing the Eknores first. Then I went and sat in that Benchmark recliner and it was so-- uncomfortable! It reclines --but not nearly as far as the Ekornes, the back support was non-existant and just plain weird, the mechanism choppy... What was I thinking?

While the Consul will be on sale until Sept. for $995, I'm thinking of waiting, saving up and going for the Mayfair. Feels like a cloud. I should be able to swing it by October, just in time for some serious winter reading. I've also been leaving the brochure all over the house just in case DH wants some serious brownie points for our 10th anniversary!

Thanks again for your input. I greatly appreciated it. (I love the couches too! I'd go for the Kensington Low back...) I'd love to try the senator but my local store does not have it on display. Boo Hoo.

I have to ask did you ever get your recliner? I really want a stressless but found a deal on a benchmark on the market place. Wondering if it’s worth it?

Teresa, I have a Mayfair Stressless recliner that I have had for 3 years and I love it. I have back problems and it is the ONLY chair that I can sit and watch TV or read for any length of time. I highly recommend these recliners. With that being said, they have gotten crazy expensive...... But if you have back problems or anything remotely like that, these chairs can be a life saver for your back or body.
