Transition between hardwood and tile

at the ends of the hardwood flooring strips, I am going to put one of the strips perpendicular to the direction of the flooring --- to act as a border between the slate tile and the hardwood. I am installing it as end of a run.

Should I use the router to cut a slot and install a " slip tongue" strip to lock the ends of the hardwood flooring strips into the piece I use as a border? or would a flush cut be all I need?

I am looking for the best way, not the easiest :)

slip tongue. They sell a reducer for it also .

IF the reducer's necessary. bobkatt-- is the slate in already?

It depends on the layout whether transition mouldings are needed. In the above posters hardwood to tile it's at an opening with the hardwood running with the opening and looks nice without moulding, but in open areas where there are large runs butting up to the two different floorings, transition mouldings are used when the hardwood is perpindicular or even at angles one to the other. The op has large areas kitchen, dining, foyer where depending on layout, more than likely would need mouldings where the two meet when perpindicular. An alternative to transitions is running a band of hardwood matching the flooring with the tile but perpindicular to the hardwood runs. Tha takes woodworking,(milling), that some installers wouldn't make time for.

Thank you Oak &Broad. I am torn right now because I worry that the floors are too rustic. I am going for a transitional look with a mix of contemporary and traditional elements and a lot of black iron and gold accents, wwhite kitchen, etc. I want the floor to be soft looking but not looking like barn board.

no the slate is on order and am ripping out the hardwood floor area where the slate is going.
I hope to be level with the hardwood and was looking to use one of the flooring strips to butt up against the ends of the run of boards in the hallway. I am 3/4 way down the hall now and need to define the end where it will go to slate.
not a reducer, but was wondering if I should router a 1/4 inch channel in the ends of the boards I am using in the hallway and use the slip tongue strip of wood to lock the ends with the board across the ends. Or should I just cut the ends of the boards and butt the perpendicular board against them.
