Replacing mattress in sleeper sofa

I've left a message for someone at the furniture store, but figure you folks will be more responsive :-)

I have a 5 year old Rowe full-size sleeper sofa. The sofa is in perfect condition, but the mattress is atrocious. I'm sure it always was, as it doesn't get heavy use.

I'm wondering if it's possible to upgrade a sleeper sofa mattress and if they're fairly standard or I'd have to go through the manufacturer?

I think it's a combination of a flimsy mattress and the construction of the bed with a big old bar right in the middle of where your back would go. I can try using some additional foam, but since we're trying to make this a long term comfortable guest bed, I'd just as soon spend a few more $$$ to get a better (and neater) solution.

I've been looking at futons, but they're not cheap and this sofa is really in perfect condition so it's a shame to just get rid of it (we have nowhere else in the house to use it).

Anyway, thanks for any advice!
