Spring-down cushions...what is your experience?

Do spring-down cushions provide more stability to a cushion than the standared foam cushion surrounded by dacron fibers?

My current 2-year old standard cushions have flattened out a lot, and it's not because of my weight. Now the sofa is so uncomfortable to sit on. This is a high quality sofa, so I would never have expected that to happen. My cheap sofa I had for 10 years...those cushions never flattened out...although it was foam directly against the upholstery, that's how cheap.

So now I'm getting a new sofa with spring-down cushions, and I'm told that they will not flatten out, that the springs add stability and comfort. Is this true? I was also told that the spring-down cushions are more firm than the standard foam cushions, but I don't know if this is true. I don't know what guage the springs are, but it is a marshall coil unit in the seat cushions.

It has to do alot with the maker of the furniture, not all cushions are created alike. Having said that, the cushion is generally slightly softer in "ride" when there is springs inside, like a marshall coil cushion. Springs will always hold the shape of the foam better over time than foam alone, one reason is the springs are pushing the foam back to its original shape. This occurs because the foam is sandwiched around the springs.

The seat deck below also plays a part here, on whether the cushion will last. A good spring deck ie: 8 way hand tied or drop in coil,will make the cushions last longer absorbing some of the weight of user over time.

My sofa will have the 8-way hand knotted spring deck. It's a Stickley sofa. I just worry that the spring-down cushions may be too soft for me and it will contribute to my lower back pain.

These spring-down cushions did feel more comfortable than the standard cushions in the store, though. I have the standard cushions on my sofa at home, and they have flattened out and are not comfortable to sit on, so I hate them. I'm keeping my fingers crossed that the spring-down cushions will work out for me. Stickley offers an extra firm version of their standard foam cushion (no springs), but they didn't have one of those cushions to try out in the store, so I passed on that type of cushion.

The biggest problem with a spring unit, or sometimes referred to as a marshall unit, is not so much the spring itself, but is the 1" or so thick foam that encases the spring unit. This 1" foam that covers the unit on top/bottom is what breaks down first, as its usually not of a high density type foam. This foam on both sides equal to 2" of seating support that once it breaks down and along with the normal softening of the polyester fiber or down/fiber blend wrap, makes the spring cushion a less durable cushion compared to a high density HR foam cushion. If the spring unit is made from a larger stiffer wire, with either a very high density foam topper or a high density polyester pad then the spring unit will outlast a HR foam of same thickness.

You are a brave gardener (!), & there's a high probability this will work out, as our spring down here has been quite nice. And if you've got blankets to cover on the iffy nights you should be good. I'm at a an age now that I won't invest the physical energy in planting out the tenders (peppers, tomatoes and my precious annuals - coleus, sweet potato vine etc) until I feel confident overnight temperatures will be above zero. I have no qualms seeding peas, carrots, beets, swiss chard etc, since they take a couple weeks to germinate (so if it gets cold, most of the seed should be okay) and once up, they are little and close to the ground, so usually escape damage from light dips in the temperature. And if they do perish, all I've lost is a couple bucks for the packet of seed and the effort to scratch a line in the soil and plant. Easy enough for me to redo. One April husband talked me into seeding carrots so we could have an early crop, and as a rule I will do 2 if not 3 successive sowings of carrots, so we don't end up with a tonne of carrots in one swack (I do this with green beans & peas also, then we eat fresh for a longer length of time). The second sowing was done either the last week of May or first week of June, and it caught up and was ready only a week after the first! So sometimes you don't always gain that much by planting out too early, since some plants will grow slower in cooler weather. It's said to be more useful if applied in the autumn Dan, for that very reason. Nutrients have all winter to break down. Part of the ideal, whether spring or autumn, is not necessarily focusing on feeding the plants, but rather feeding the soil. Feed to the soil life, which is in much more abundance if not tilled, and they feed the plants all the mineral and nutrients they need, that is otherwise harder for the plant to get in the soil when tilling due to less of that soil life, thus the need for more of those nutrients in regular feeding schedules. You COULD just use a thick, heavy mulch of primarily hay and leaves or some other organic matter, and I am doing that as well as the compost, but the compost provides a stronger start for a brand NEW garden due to a space to sow seeds into, transplant plants into, as well as give a quick feed to the soil life. Not to mention it's also full of soil life, which, if taken care of, can possibly provide some long term nutrients to the plant in a brand new garden as that. Its going to be a very interesting experiment. I have some beds tilled to compare of course. I would recommend checking out Charles Dowding if you are interested. I am largely following a combination of his and Ruth Stout's methods. He has website with bi-weekly updates on his market garden as well as all of the experiments he runs. It's a very neat concept. Of course, he is in the U.K. so a bit different climate, making this an even more adventurous experiment.

Mia, my Sherrill sofa is 6 mos old and it gets compressed areas that do not decompress. It happens every time I lay down on it. They have switched out the cushions 3 times, but same problem occurs. $3,300. I am told the local family owned store has never seen this before. Did your problem get resolved?
