Anyone know about Tauari (Brazilian Oak) ?

I like the color of Tauari and it comes in the 5" wide planks that we want. But, when I researched online, there were big discrepancies in the hardness (Janka rating) listed on different sites. Some said it was as low as 880 or as high as about 1500. 880 seems really soft. I don't want to make a big mistake- this is going in our kitchen, family room, dining room, and entry and I do have kids and pets. The harder Brazilian hardwoods all seem to have a reddish color, which I don't think looks as good with the granite we have. I really like walnut, but that too is very soft (1010 on the Janka scale) and the floor store is advising me against it. I need to pick a floor ASAP. Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated.

I have below a link to the Janka Rating of Hardwood Flooring. Amendoim is a hard wood while Tauri is similar in hardness to American Oak. Tauri is Brazilian Oak and is not Amendoim I am told.

PLANKS TO YOU - Janka Hardness Chart that looks the most accurate so far with Brazilian Cherry at 2820 Janka, Tauri (Brailian Oak) at 1460 Janka and Amendoim at 1920 Janka which agreed to what BR-111 used to list as Janka Ratings before Website Change.

I see what you mean. Some sites have Tauri at 880 and other sites have it at 2920 but the majority have the rating at 1460 and say it is 13% harder than American Red Oak.

From pictures on the BR-111 site, it appears Amendoim is darker with a touch of red/pink compared to Tauari that is more tannish with less color variation. But then again, I have seen Brazilian Oak floors that are so knotty.

I wonder if there are so many types of Brazilian Oak and there is not a standard for stores that all their wood this?

Now I am curious also and would love more input from others more knowelegeable.

Ok thanks ! How about it's roots ? Are they aggressive & will go to water (say a septic tank) ? I read on the net, they love water & will grow along streams. I will have this tree about 100' from the septic tank itself & about 35' or so from the leach beds. Would this work ? The tree would be about 30' or so foot from the house/garage. Are they messy ? So, now with this info, what do you think ? I have picked this tree up already from Lowe's & it was 50% off. It's about 1" to 1.5" in diameter (not too thick for the height) & about 10' high. Just want to get it planted & don't want to move once it's in. ~Thanks~

Has anyone ever seen Johnsons Brazilian Oak hand scraped?

My flooring place is trying to locate a sample of it for us to see in person. The pictures I have seen of it on the internet look kind of yellowish and uniform in color, which concerns me. I really like brazilian oak because I like the variation of colors you get with it. Will the Johnson B.O. darken over time? We had also looked at the BR-111 triangulo B.O. and loved the look of it, but would really prefer a handscraped/distressed finish with kids and a dog. Also, when doing searches on the internet of Johnson Brazilian Oak, I came across a complaint (the same one several times) about scratches in the surface. I know all wood scratches, but would the Johnson be any worse with scratches than any of the other brands? Any help anyone could provide would be greatly apreciated!

Puffery. I like that description. No doubt they make a very good product, but getting down to tacks, scratch or wear resistance says nothing about durability. Most new floor buyers get far too obsessed in having the near perfect care free floor. Sales people oversell and mislead. I get that durability question asked constantly. I lead people down the path of reality by educating them any floor will scratch, ding or dent regardless of the finish. Johnson makes a good point and I've heard it as well along with a laminate type finish look. Some hardwoods and appearances are more forgiving to showing the inevitable scratches. I call that durability. Hickory, Red and White Oak character, low matte, natural oil, wire brushed, hand scraped and other textures all work well. A smooth Maple and higher gloss finishes on the other hand absolutely not.

Just a little Heads up. Brazilian Oak is called Tauri. It is an 'exotic' hardwood (it comes from somewhere other than your continent). Like MOST exotic hardwoods it is photosensitive. That is to say it GETS DARKER as it ages. This has NOTHING to do with the finish. It has everything to do with the WOOD. The pretty, soft, velvety browns and smooth beige you are seeing WILL NOT last. Nope. They get darker and STRONGER in colour. Yah. Even though they are ranked as 'low' on the photosensitivity radar...they will still get a snick darker as soon as they are exposed to 'light'. The white oak is not something that has this issue. In fact it can fade in a medium amount of time in direct sunlight (with old windows with very little UV block on them). And the STAIRS are going to be a NIGHTMARE with Tauri. The amount of effort put into 'matching' the colouring with another species can double your flooring budget. Nope. Not kidding. And just so you know...there are PLENTY OF COMPAINTS about Shaw wood flooring products. I would suggest you go ahead and search this website to see what people are complaining about. Some of the treads are old...and some are very new (like 1-2 weeks old?) which tells me Shaw is NOT pulling up it's socks on this issue.

The Brazilian woods are very confusing. I love the look of the BR-111 Amendoim- it has a very nice looking finish and is really pretty. But we have a big skylight in our kitchen and under the strong natural light, the red tones really come out in the sample. Actually, it totally amazes me how this floor's appearance can change depending on the lighting on it. Anyway, our granite has more yellows, greens, and browns and the Amendoim doesn't look quite right to me. Sigh... That led me to the Tauari, which as you say, is more tan. I'm looking at a brand called Nature Flooring. The whole floor is 1/2" thick but the top layer is about half as thick as the BR-111, and then I came across the conflicting Janka ratings. So now I'm not sure what to do. Next step is probably another visit to the floor store (for the umpteenth time).

I can provide here a better reference for brazilian woods. From a technical institute specialized in that and many other things it's IPT. here you can search using "nome popular" set "tauari" or any other brazilian wood. Then on the result you can search for "Dureza janka paralela" that is janka hardness there are two type at 12% humidity or dry I suppose. There are many other physical characteristics too. Don't forget to convert from newtons to pounds force that is divide by ~4.48. For example tauari has janka hardness of 3727 N or 831 pounds force. here the tauari page Enjoy!
